This thread isn't very country specific but I have alot of coins from many different countries that I know little to nothing about. Please take a look and share any info you might have on them. The first coin is one of the most beautiful coins I've ever seen. It's also the one with the least telling info on it. 2 Sen -? Anyone know anything about this coin? Uknown Asian Coin (?): The Italian coin has some really nice rainbow toning on it. I think it shows pretty good in the image. The date is on the edge of the coin - 1964. The rest of the coins are pretty nice. This is the first Haitian coin I think I've ever seen - not to mention one from 1886. Any additional information on any of these coins is greatly appreciated. I'll be doing some searching of my own as well but I'm sure some of you may know some important points that I might never find on my own. Hong Kong Coin: Italian Silver(?) Coin: Haitian 2c: 10 Pennia - ?: Thank you all for your expertise. -Bill.

maudry, Thank you for catching my error. I didn't catch my mistake even after looking it over after posting . OOPS! Let's try that again. This should be what the other side looks like: Japanese Coin: Do you know the date on the Japanese coin? Is there any way for me to delete the duplicate image? I have yet to figure out how to edit my own posts . Seems one should be able to.

Wow! I'm just amazed at the beauty of the 2 sen! It's quite a big coin too!
And Meiji 6 = 1873

wd1040; The 2 Sen coin is even nicer in person -imo. The color in the photos is a bit off. The first two images come closest to the actual color. The third pic is a bit lighter than the actual coin. I adjusted the images a little as I was trying to capture the "mint luster" that can really be seen on this coin in person. So you're saying the date is 1873? I did some searching on "2 Sen Coin" and came up with a pretty nice site that has quite a bit of info. But I didn't see any way on that site to determine the exact date. http://www.lioncoins.com/nippon1.htmAs for the size of the coin? It is slightly larger in dia and just a bit thicker than a Kennedy half dollar. A newer JFK half weighs 11.2 grams and the 2 Sen weighs 14.0gr or .49oz. .

If you managed to pull that Japanese 2 sen coin off a junk coin lot, congradulations! Mintage of this coin 1873 (Meiji 6) and Meiji 7 is given at around 4 million. No breakdown figure is given. It's tough to find in a decent condition so I reckon you should be able to get at least 50 dollars for it. <removed by staff, you know better, if not read the rules again>. You can see my website to give you a rough idea of the dates of the Japanese coins. gxseries.com -> numismatic section

Hi numi Very nice 2 sen coin. wd1040 was right about the year. It's on the obverse at 2 o'clock and if you rotate about 180 degrees you'll see the Japanese character for 6. (Image attached) Catalog ref. is Y#18.1 (the type with square scales on the dragon) and my 6th edition of Krause gives F: 35.00, VF: 125.00, XF: 250.00, Unc: 1,500.00. Sorry I'm not a grader but someone else may chip in with an opinion.

It's me again. The Italian is silver (should be 11.00g.)but the date is in raised lettering on the edge (1958-2000). The 10 pennia is from Finland. N II refers to Nicholas II of Russia because the country was a Grand Duchy under his rule until 1917. F: 2.00, VF: 7.50, XF: 30.00

Thank you all for your detailed and informative comments. I knew when I first saw this coin that it was a great looking coin. Based on all of your info and comments it seems it may be an even better find than I first realized. I know next to nothing about grading but I will say that it really is in very nice condition. I can especially emphasize that point now that I know that it's 137 years old! Very Nice ! Having said that, unfortunately, the coin is not mine. A friend of mine rec'd it (he said inherited) from his new wife as part of a coin collection she had gotten in a divorce settlement. So I know nothing about the individual who actually put his heart, soul, and time into putting together a fine collection that these coins are part of, only to lose it all. Can ya tell I feel a little sympathy for the poor fella who lost his coins in a divorce?! What a bummer! I'm sure he felt a little like this ! Okay, back to topic. I know you all know the rules so I won't be offering this or the other coins for sale via this forum - yet! Even though I've been a member since 1/25/08 I haven't been regular enough here to have accumulated 250 posts. Ironically, in '08 I would have only needed 50 posts to offer things for sale here. But the new rules are the rules & I have no problem with that. Besides, I have alot of new coins to post about so it won't take long to rack up another 150 somthin' more posts. And I know I/we will learn alot in the process. thai-vic; Thank you for the extra effort you went to on sharing more details on these coins. I especially appreciate the illustation showing exactly where the date is. Very nice to know. gxseries; I know of few places in my area that has "junk baskets" with world coins in them. As I learn more about the world coins I will certainly give these junk baskets a closer eye in the future . Anyone know much about the Haitian coin? Thanks again!

The Haitian one has a nice bit of history (it's not off the top of my head but the info is there in Krause's 19th c. catalog). 1886 is the date of issue but the 83 refers to when the native islanders ousted the French rulers in 1803! Value: F 1.50; VF 2.50; XF 7.00.
The Italian one (I'd missed the date you gave in the posting) 1964. Value: VF 2.00; XF 7.50.
As for the friend who received them from his new wife (via her ex) well that just sucks. I think I would rather have sold my kids into slavery than part with any of my coins. As it was my ex was satisfied with the antique furniture we'd accumulated and left MY coins to me. That way I also avoided shipping costs for bulky furniture over 8-9,000 miles!

Thanks thai-vic. I appreciate te insight on what the 83 meant. I was wondering about that. I'm going to have to check my library for a Krause's catalog and other world coin books. There's alot to be learned.
Sorry about placing some text in between some of the pictures. I didn't realize at first just how easy it would be to scan right past it when looking at the images.
Do you happen to know the silver % of the 64 Italian coin? I'll do a google on myself too.

BTW, according to some info I found (google) on another coin forum, the silver content of the '64 Italian coin is .835.
