This really isn't a bad looking dime in hand, but I'm suspicious of its surfaces. I'm thinking its been cleaned or whizzed or something. What do you think?

Agree with you...looks like some kind of whizzing going on...too many light scratches

Totally agree that something happened to it. It looks whizzed due to the many fine scratches and the back, especially the "one dime" really are telling of being cleaned somehow.

Certainly a nice piece, but it does look "spiffed up" abit. Those horizontal scratches are somewhat distracting. And they buzzed off the "S".

Ya it looks like it was scrubbed pretty good IMO. I have a 1914 that may look like this one did before cleaning

1913S is a key date. It was a joke I expect.

This coin has been cleaned but not whizzed, they are NOT the same thing. Whizzing is a mechanical method used to "recreate" or "simulate" luster and the process will typically leave metal built up around the devices. Long, continuous, parallel hairlines such as the ones on the posted coin are typically caused by wiping action.

Scrubbed, but not "whizzed." Whizzing is a polishing process, which doesn't leave marks.
'Tis a shame. Nice coin.

AU details cleaned (somewhat harshly). I only say somewhat because I've seen worse : (

If those horizontal hairlines were just on the portrait I'd suspect they were slide marks from album windows. Since they also cross the fields they are most likely evidence of cleaning. As Shadowcreator notes, there are much more severe examples of cleaning. This coin is relatively presentable and I'll bet the hairlines are less noticeable in-hand. I'd grade it AU-58 for detail; just a whisper away from MS.
