Hmmm...
Doesn't look fake, are you saying a really beat up impaired proof? I never checked.

I guess it's not really fair unless the coin is in hand. It's counterfeit. It weighs 9.58 grams. Not sure what the metal is Looking at the edge, it's wavy as well. You did IMO, nail the grade SC giving it was a genuine coin.

So why would someone counterfeit a common barber half in low grade condition? Practice? Just happen to be the one they had to cast?

Unknown, unless they made several of them to cash in. It's pretty darn close to the diagnostics of a genuine coin.

All those raised pimples are a giveaway too.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't all those raised pimples indicative of being struck with dies created using the spark erosion method?

No surprise its fake though, I didn't think an impaired proof would be THIS beat up. I had a fake that looked kind of like this but I thought it might just have been really corroded.

Spark erosion method? I don't know what that is.

I remember reading an article somewhere about the spark erosion process of creating counterfeits. I googled it and found this article by Rick Snow: http://www.whitmanbooks.com/Default...ewGuest_0606About halfway down he explains how spark erosion counterfeits are made. The raised pimples are a telltale sign. It's a cool article.

With the mushy devices, fake was my first impression. 50 cents was worth something in 1911...I gotta wonder if it's a contemporary counterfeit.

probably is a contemporary counterfeit. Just good enough to pass as legal tender. probably made out of a mish mash of metal.

Yeah, almost like a "pot" metal.
