I would like to know if this cross sectional view is just dirt or indicative of something else.

I see a dark line in the middle of the thickness of the coin covering about 45 degrees of the circumference.

A small indentation is also present near the end of this black line but I am unsure if this is caused by normal wear and tear or by some other phenomenon.

Please comment.

Could be a lamination, caused by an imperfect mixing of the metal alloy. Coins have benn known to split entirely in half due to this effect (very rare).

What is the grade of the coin? Looks like about VG-8 from the picture.
