I was hoping to get some opinions on what types of storage options would be best to use, and any in particular I should stay away from. I know not to use anything that contains pvc like the soft flips and about the folders with slides that can scratch coins, but what about the 2x2 cardboard holders? Some things I have read makes it sound like I should stay away from them as well. Do most people go for airtight holders for their coins? I'm assuming airtight holders arent worth the cost either way for very inexpensive coins. Also is the coins metal a consideration, for example is it more important with silver to go with one type over another?

Hi Myst,
Most people use 2x2s. They are very cheap, they protect your coins pretty well and they are almost airtight. They are also easier to store and you can put them in a album with the 2x2 sheets. I use 2x2s.

People use the airtight holder for their more expensive coins. These are airtight and your coins wont get scratched, or nicked.

Its really all preference and how much money you want to spend.

If you have 1000s of one type of coin, I would use tubes. Maybe seperate by date/mint mark/condition. If you have a few to a hundred or so, I would use the 2x2 flips. I use a lot of them, and I love them. You can write on them what you please. I would advise you to use airtites for the coins that are $10 and over. This is how I organize my coins! As for the metal of a coin, different alloys are used for each different coin, but keep an eye out for any silver or gold (duh!). Hope it helps. Welcome to the forum!

I use 2x2 for most of my coins that are not part of a set. Most of my set I am working on keep in a dansco album. I use both styles of albums the folders and deluxe album. A coin album will make it nice to show and for you to view. I alway use airtites with my silver Bullion dollars it give it extra pertection. I also agree that if you have coins over 15+ dollar should go in a album or airtite.

I have 2x2's for my common coins, and air-tites for my morgans. I don't mind keeping some lower priced coins in mylar flips, but that's just a personal preferance. You just need to find your own median between protection and cost.

I use nothing but airtites for all my non-slabbed coins. I figure if the coin is worth having, its worth an airtite, but then I don't have thousands of coins eiither.

I use Dansco and Whitman albums for my sets. I use airtites for my silver rounds and silver dollars. I quit using 2x2's because of some damage from staples to a couple of items, luckily they were of not big value but still, it sucked. I swithed to flips for those items, I know there is a chance of scratching but I don't mess with them much. I put them in the flip and then in a 2x2 box. If you do the 2x2's then you need the pages to put them in if you don't want to take a chance on staple damage. That gets expensive. I went to a website I use to buy supplies and went back and forth on the pricing by putting things in my shopping cart. I would see how much that was then clear the cart and then add the next type of storage item to see how much that would be. If I could afford it, everthing would be in an airtite but that would be pricey. I try to balance it out on cost and value of what I have. I don't necessarily want to put a .15¢ wheatie in a .42¢ airtite. Just isn't feasible. I would rather have that money to put into more coins. I think like some of the other members mentioned, if it is worth a certain value then airtite it ($10, but you have to set your own limit here), anything below that you can then go with flips perhaps (pvc free of course) for $3-$10 range and then maybe 2x2's for the remainder. This is only my thoughts and opinions on the subject. The reason I posted is I asked this same question a few weeks ago so all the research I did and the pricing is all still fresh in my memory.

Thanks for the replies guys, makes me feel more comfortable to know most of your use 2x2s for at least some of your collection. Most of what I have now is fairly inexpensive, didnt have much money to spend on it when I was a kid. I think for the time being I'm just going to stick with 2x2s and replace some of the funky reused ones etc. As I start getting some nice new stuff I'll probably go for airtites if they're not slabbed. I'd like to display some of my stuff too, been thinkin of a few ideas not sure what I'm gonna go with yet, but I might just steal a shelf in my wifes curio cabinet.

Airtite makes this wooden display case (I think). It'd be great for a complete type set or something of that magnitude.
