I have accounts at Wachovia and TD Bank. Neither of them will order half dollars for me. They sometimes have some rolls but they are already picked. Whare are you going to get half dollars? Can you order online or something? I was told wachovia would order them so I told the to get me $1k worth and now they say the can't do it. Please help. I live in the Philadelphia area. Thank you.

I live in eastern North Carolina and I have no problem getting halves ordered for me from Wachovia. It may be that they are afraid of getting stuck with them.

mr. mono,
just drive around to different banks regardless of whether you're a member at them and buy up all the loose / rolled halves you can afford. you can use the banks you're a member of for dumping in this case. piece of cake. I went to 5 banks today and each one only had like 2.50 of halves...bought em all, came out with three silvers.
happy hunting.

Since the removal of silver from coins, there were about 3 billion half dollar coins minted. When I noticed there were very few in the market I started asking where they went. Now, that's enough for 10 coins for every American. Noone I talked to had any good/verifiable answers. I was able to order from the Wells Fargo bank at $500 boxes. I will be buying and holding until I get it figured out. Does anyone here have a reasonable/verifiable answer. Only the mint knows, for sure. ?

Gordon, not sure I follow your reasoning.
Half dollars are out there, they're just not very commonly used anymore. Half dollars used to be very common pre 60's b/c their purchasing power was still high. Today 50cents is not going to buy you much so why carry around a bunch of heavy coins when dollar bills are so cheap. That's the bulk of your answer right there.
Monkeyman, If you live in an area with lots of banks just drive around until you find a bank that has some, eventually one will. You should be able to find a bank that will order them for you, but you may need an account with them. Also keep in mind that some bank branches can be more helpful that others. So you may find a wachovia branch that will order them for you where others have said they couldn't. try calling around.

mrak, Your point about the weight, etc. is understood. But that doesn't explain where the 3 billion Kennedy halves are being held. Furthermore, why are there millions being minted each year. If the mint were to say that they were being melted for other new coins , that would explain it. Now with the demise of the fiat dollar and the current rise in metal price, I would guess there are other reasons. Also, the composition and weight of two new quarters vice one new half is the same. Personally, a little weight in my pocket is not a bad thing right now. I'm not trying to be a smart a-- , but I'm sure you get my point. -G

Try several different branches of banks, and also go to several Wachovia's and TD Bank's (Assuming there are enough locations in your area). At one Harris I was told they would be charging $10 for each box of halves, but with the other Harris I go to I can order as many as I want per week without issue. Best of luck in your searching.

Quote: Does anyone here have a reasonable/verifiable answer. Gordon, Probably many were melted down during the run on Silver in the early 80s and probably many more are being melted down currently. Most of the rest are being hoarded and/or traded as "junk silver," I would say.

Monkeyman, do you have Bank of America in your area? I have always had good luck with BOA on ordering boxes of halves.

bnacoin, There is no silver in the 3 billion half dollar coins that I am referring to. Their composition is .750 copper and .250 nickel. My point in the first place would be the paper dollar has no intrinsic value and it appears our coins are being replaced with cheap materials making their future questionable. When I pick up a Sacagawea dollar I am reminded of the old aluminum or plastic tax tokens. In other words, "new junk" from the guvamint. Thanks for trying to help with an answer. -G

bnacoin, Well, that GAO chart does show that in recent years the half dollar coins are going back to the vaults. It can be theorized that once the magic number of coins are returned the Kennedy half will be replaced by another smaller , cheaper coin. What do you think about that scenario ?

I don't follow that logic. There are very few half dollars in actual circulation these days. If anything, the government could just stop minting halves. It hasn't minted business strikes in a long time anyway. I don't know any reason it would just try again with a smaller coin. But who knows?

I took your advise and tried some other branches. The Wachovia near my house was telling me they get charged and have to order 5k worth, blah blah blah. So I wen to one on my way home from work. The guy is like "Ok you can pick them up thursday". I also tried a different TD Bank and they said they would do it too. So shop around. What kind of luck do you guys generally get in a $500 box? One coin? One in 5 boxes? 5 in one box? Curious as to what I should expect.
