The 2012 Commems might be pretty cool ! Obama signed the act, and they are saying the act calls for production of up to 100,000 gold $5.00 coins and not more than 500,000 silver dollars, both in Uncirculated and Proof versions, dated 2012. The legislation specifies that the designs "shall be emblematic of the War of 1812 and particularly the Battle for Baltimore that formed the basis for the "Star-SSpangled Banner." Until I see the actual designs...obviously I'll withold judgement, but I'm kind of excited by this one !.....at least the possibilities that it could look PRETTY COOL !! ..... Anybody else's thoughts on this one ?......More insight ?

Similarly, I was equally as excited by the 2008 Jamestown gold coin and silver dollar. But I was really surprised that the Silver dollar didn't seem to get much attention at all by the numismatic world. Nobody really seemed to care about it at all ! There were no premiums.....price hikes.....demand......nothing ! ..... "I" certainly love " my" coin though, regardless of that, but it was rather a let-down to observe, and to continue to observe the 'flat/near zero interest' in the Jamestown coins. Intrinsic value was/is pretty much it with those, sadly....... And I only mention this about that coin.....because I'm hoping that there will be some kind of demand/interest/excitement in the 2012 ones, and that it won't have a similar fate as the Jamestown coinage.

I'm surprised the American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars still haven't sold out at the Mint.

Yeah......if any Commem. coin ever " Deserved" an excitement level......it would have to be that one for sure ! I don't know what it will take to get the public interest going for Ultra Modern Commem's, if some of these great pieces don't do it.....

I thought the 2007 Jamestown was the best looking issue the mint put out in a long time. I also thought the 2008 Bald Eagle was nice. In my estimation neither was very popular. I would like to see a well designed issue that had a ship with cannons and full sails. The American Veterans Disabled for Life is truly the most deserving issue ever minted. The sad part of our Country is that less than 65% of all men 40years old have had any military duty. We who served shed tears but with some it is out of sight out of mind. Just a thought. I too hope for a issue that is well received.

In my opinion, the Disabled Vets obverse is not very attractive to look at. I am a peace time vet (natl guard) and appreciate greatly the sacrifice of wartime vets, especially those disabled. However, looking at an amputee can be awkward, and for some, it is a frightening phobia. To be blunt I think the coin lacks eye appeal.
I am anxious to see the 2012 SSB coin too.

A war of 1812 commemorative sounds interesting. I'm looking forward to a design preview.
