Had alot of funny experences roll searching buying junk silver, so I thought why not start a thread where we can laugh together and learn from each others experiences. I know if I don't jot my stories down I will forget them! ENJOY! So I posted an ad on Craigs List that I am interested in buying any silver us coin. I got a couple responses but no bites until Monday 10-11-10. I told this guy on the Friday before I would give him $25 for his 21 Mercury dimes. He got back to me on Monday and asked if I would do a barter with him. I thought that it was a little strange but I said I would. He proceeded to explain to me how it was his girlfriends birthday and he had just lost his wallet. He then asked me if I would buy him the biggest, cheapest bottle of vodka for 15 of the dimes so he and his girl could party all afternoon. He swore to me he was 21, when I got there I felt comfortable in the fact he was well over 21. He did say to me when we made the swap he wanted to save the rest of them to give to his kids someday because he got them from his grandpa. So thanks to his deceased grandpa, he got a cheap bottle of vodka. Grandpa would be so proud!

Very funny. I put up $200 worth of silver JFK halves and so I get a reply and he offers $134, AND in these very words " I will even throw in a very big cherry wood backboard for your bed but ontop of that you have to help me melt the coins into the bars." hah I'm interested to see some other replys.

I also use craig's list and update my ads often. I had my first reply about early September. The guy said he had pawned seven Morgan silver dollars for $50 and he wanted to know what I would offer for them. I said I would give him $105= $15 a piece (thinking they had to be pretty worn or common date morgans since he only pawned them for $50). He said deal. I went and picked them up at a local public place. A couple of the morgans had MM's from S and O on them and the P's were not all common dates either. So I brought them home and got to looking at them and they would all grade at a minimum of 50 and a couple of them are in MS state for sure. Good deal all around. A couple weeks after that I got another reply that this gentleman's father had just passed away and he had a lot of Mercury dimes, Barber halves, franklin and Kennedy halves, wheat cents, and a couple Morgans. I had him send me a list of what he had in terms of #'s of each one. So he sent me a nice spreadsheet of everything they had. A dealer up North of me made him an offer of melt value only, and I beat the offer by a little bit and got the coins. The silver melt value was over $400 (in mid September) and I offered $50 more mainly because of the 100's of wheat cents he had that appeared to be nice bu rolls of teens through 30s. He accepted my offer which was great. I have found it to be a great resource to buy coins...especially from people that don't know what they really have. But I have made competitive offers and they were accepted. As a side note, I have a co worker who is 70 and he has buckets of silver halves and silver quarters in an office room of his house that he's never went through and has told me that he wants to catalog whats in those buckets and I can have any extra's I want if I help him catalog them.. super nice guy and I told him that I wouldn't feel right just taking them and that I would offer him something for what I did take or make him dinner a few weeks straight, his dog just got put down and he's lost right now but the sweetest, nicest guy a person could ever meet.

Thanks andrewj.... the gentleman I work with has a lot of valuable coins. He has a lot of early date fractional gold coins, proof buffalo nickels- graded/slabbed, rolls of silver dimes, and just lots of old, old silver coinage most pre 1920. I am going over to visit him at his home this coming week sometime and I cannot wait to see what he has. He's going to the bank to get some stuff out of his safety deposit boxes he wants to show me. He has a lot of early, early proof sets too. I'm just guessing but his coin collection is probably worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. I told him it's a good thing he's got the high dollar stuff in the safety deposit boxes and to keep them there. I've seen some of the individual coins that he's had graded and slabbed that he brought in to work. A couple of the proof Buffalo nickels are just amazing. He bought that collection of buffalo's from a local guy here in Iowa. I cannot tell you how many gold coins he has, but it's in the 100s and most of those are 1850's through about 1925. He really liked the bicentennial lincoln proof coins last year so I picked him up a set from the mint as a birthday present for him. I'm giving him a silver proof set for xmas this year. We've become such good friends and glad that I am going to see probably the most amazing coin collection I've ever seen.

well I'm a fledgling searcher, but while looking for JFK halves, I went to a bank and asked for halves and the lady says, "well we've got about 2.00 worth, and one of them is silver," I gave her a perplexed look, suggesting something like "why wouldn't you just pocket it yourself?" and then I just bought the silver one.

Just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago. He said that I'm more than welcome to look but isn't to keen on having pictures taken. I'll see if I can work him a bit on that maybe I can get some pics. I can understand his pov so we'll see. I don't know if I'd want anyone knowing the coins I had in my home but most of my good stuff is in a huge fire proof safe in the office room.

Just met with a guy to talk about me buying his circulated coin collection. I mentioned that I was paying 12x face for circulated silver coin. We counted out what he had and in came to about $54 dollars face value. It consisted of Walkers, Franklins, Mercurys, Barber quarters and Liberty quarters. I offered him $638 he countered with $625 and he threw in a 1971 Mint Sealed Eisenhower dollar. He was so blown away by the price he offered me less. Great Guy and good sale all around.

Everytime I offer someone money on craigs for silver they think they have some rare million dollar coins grandpa left them , then they goto a dealer and usually get offered melt value then email me back trying to get anything above the dealers offer.
I dont play those games of email tag. I'm paying 10X face point blank take it or leave it LOL. So far only one bite roll of 20 1963 frankiln halves near mint condition bought at 5$ each ( 100$ a roll ) took it to a silver buyer/collector sold at 17X face for 170$ being they were in such nice shape he paid full spot figuring he can sell them for a lil more at shows. My opinion 63 is such a common date with so many proofs full spot was a fair deal and being in great shape didnt hurt at all but dindt ad to much to the value being they were not officially graded
But as far as the wheat pennies and othr coins, most people just have coins in a draw they think is priceless and refuse to take anything under a small fortune for them and dont wanna hear what they are really worth
so I guess just the franklins so far

Well I saw my co workers collection yesterday... unfortunately he was not up on allowing me to take pictures I couldn't convince him. I really, really tried. But needless to say I'm just blown away at what this guy has. He has a complete $2.50 gold eagle set which is just stunning as some of those coins are worth thousands and thousands of dollars. He has a lot of early california territorial gold coins that are certified authentic with high au/low ms grades. Has various other gold coins mainly between 1880 and 1925 or there abouts. Of course tons of silver as I posted previously...his silver alone we are talking again thousands upon thousands of dollars folks. And he has a huge collection of proof graded Buffalo nickels of which there aren't a whole lot of around. Also, almost every year of CC Morgan dollars authenticated and graded. He said that when he was younger and making much more money that he just bought collections for cents on the dollar and tucked a bunch of it away and forgot about it for a long time until he heard that I collected coins. He thought that I would like to see everything. He actually told me if there is anything I wanted to let him know because he know's I'll appreciate it and won't just sell it like his children will when he passes. But I'm gonna try and buy a few things he has if he wants to sell, and yes I did see the buckets of halves- all different kinds and same with quarters as well and all silver. We're in the meteorology business and he just works to have something to do more or less so I have the income to where I can buy some nice things if I want to and he is very securely retired essentially. He said he had other stuff to let me see but would have to wait until next time.... old proof sets he said from 1940 going forward. He was born in 1940 so that was the year he started with.
