Please see the reverse of my 1926-D Peace dollar.

Notice what appears to be a die scratch running through 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' and the eagles head.

Is this a known VAM?

I looked on VAM Finder, and they list 6-7 vams for this mintage, but only have diagnostic pictures for 3 of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

That appears to be a die crack and not a scratch. Normally cracks get may be noted as a secondary diagnostic on an existing listing, but won't generate a separate listing. As the crack progresses to a break and metal is displaced (surface blobs of metal or field displacements) Leroy will give these a separate listing.

Looks like a scratch on the coin (rather than the die) to me.

It is definately not a scratch on the coin, as it is raised, not incused.

Yes, I 'understand' that it is raised. It looks like a deep scratch or cut on the coin.

jerseycat10,

Go to VAMWorld and see the 1878, 8TF, VAM 14.2. It shows the late die state crack from the top of the cap through the field and back into the hair and neck. It covers over half the obv die, but doesn't generate a separate listing. Normally these type cracks don't progress to breaks before they are retired. Since there is no mention of this crack in any current 26-D listing, it probably had a short life. I would recommend matching diagnostics of the coin to a current listing, let us know which one it is and then we can discuss scenarios.

edit - I just visited the 26-D page and it appears to be ripe for discovery. Very little there and several recent discoveries. You might post the pictures on the discussion pages there and see if any of the Peace dollar experts can offer guidance.

My apologies, I meant VAMWorld. Not sure where I got VAMFinder from.

Anyways, I posted this same question over there:

I am excited to see what comes of it.

Many Thanks,
