What is coin conservation? Is it recommended before grading on older coins. What is there connection with NGC. Could coins that are unable to be graded because of a residue be helped by this service or is it a waste of money? Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

It's a process in which NCS takes a problem coin, as an example, one with PVC residue or a proof with impaired surfaces, and carefully conserves it as close to the original appearance as possible. It is reserved for higher end coins with problems. I have never used their service, but heard they do a very nice job. They are affiliated with NGC. It's NGC's conservation service.

They will not alter the surface that makes a non gradable coin (or net graded coin now) and turn it into a problem free coin. If a coin has certain problems it will always have those certain problems. if there is some kind of stuff on the coin like tape residue or PVC or something like that then the NCS can make it more market acceptable. here is a link to one coin they conserved recently http://www.ncscoin.com/news/viewart...rticleID=930

Last month I send 6 Greek cooper high grade coins to NCS with vedigree problem. The result is that 4 graded ms65,1 ms63 and one with altered color. The results were fantastic for 135$ include encapsulation. The ms65 were the highest graded. The job is astonishing. They reveal much of the red on cooper coins.

A few more things about NCS:

* They can refuse to conserve your coins. Many coins cannot be saved, the damage is done and chances of a successful conservation is slim to none.
* They don't always do perfect job. Many of their conserved coins end up in body bag holders.
* Sometimes they only do "good enough" to make a coin holder. A spot or two might remain after conservation, but not bad enough to prevent grading.
* It's usually only worthwhile on more valuable coins and it can be quite costly but sometimes it is fairly inexpensive (~$30) too.

With practice and experience most collectors can conserve their own coins. However, many inexperienced collectors have ruined their coins when attempting conservation.....they turned conservation into cleaning. There's a FINE line between the two and once it's crossed there's no turning back.

Bryan, Thanks for that link that really shows what NCS is capable of. Thad, Thank you for you help. I have used Verdi=Care with good results on coins that would not grade out but needed to be refreshed. What bothers me is a coin not graded with the comment Ungradable/Residue. I was never told what the residue was or if it could be made gradable by NCS but my only recourse was trying conservation. Thanks to all for the responses. Have a Good Day.
