Thanks (especially for not slapping me away like an obnoxious brat, anyway). I'll try to track down those negs (gotta do some computer work for a friend first) and then see about converting a few of them and posting them - if they are of sufficient quality. I'll start a new thread.

I think what pls is asking, is there much chance of assisting in the identification of those exact coins for purposes of return to him/her, even if he/she has to buy them back from the current owner. I don't think that attribution was on the agenda. If that is a good assessment of your question pls, then I would have to say that it is 'possible', (but about as probable as winning the lottery). There are millions of these coins floating around, and many will never be seen by the public again.

Dave, I just found out I won't be around tonight or probably all day tomorrow, so please don't go to any trouble with the encyclopedia thing on my account, by the time I get back here tomorrow afternoon or evening, I will have forgotten all about everything. I am pretty scatter-brained as you know.

Oh I guess I read it wrong, I guess since this is the VAM section I thought he was asking if we could see what VAM's he once had that his grandmother had given him. comparing pictures of one coin to another can be done but you have to have a idea of what coin is what. it is almost impossible to see a picture of a coin and then go out and find another picture of the exact same coin just out of the blue. You have better chances of winning the lottery 5 times in your lifetime (not just winning the lottery once). Now if you have your pictures of your coins and you think you know who had stolen your coins and they have some coins themselves that you know of of the same date denomination then if you take pictures of their coins and still have pictures of yours to compare them to then there is a chance they can be matched up but anything other than that this is an impossible task. I am sorry I misunderstood what you were asking the first time

Just got this email from LVA Quote:Hi Mr. Bryan: Examined your two coins today & was amazed to confirm that one is a 78 P 7TF with unlisted B1 rev! So it is a new VAM 85--congratulations on a great new find! John Baumgart had asked me to prepare an article for VAM-E publication about the new variety if it was confirmed. Attached is the article I prepared and sent to him along with 4 photos I took of your coin. Hope they meet your approval. Article is in Corel WordPerfect ver 8 which MS Word should be able to open if you specify open with WordPerfect. Will be mailing your two 78 P back to you via Registered & insured mail on Wed 27 Oct. Thanks, Leroy

First new B1 Die to be discovered since the book was written in 1965 according to the letter that Mr Van Allen sent with the email Quote:So it is the first new die combination for 1878 P B1 reverse varieties since they were originally listed in Van Allen's 1965 booklet, Morgan and Peace dollar Varieties

Congrats on the news from LVA (he still uses WordPerfect?). I thought it might be a win-the-lottery-today situation to track down my silver dollars, but I had to ask - hey, with all the nitty-gritty points of contention expressed in this thread, who knows what might show up and tickle someone's memory buds? At this point, the negs aren't where I thought I'd filed them, so let's not hold our collective breath until I can track them down and process them. And when I do get them converted, I'll look for some more obvious markings which would be easy to match up. If something does pop, I can always post more. Thanks for the encouragement. And maybe I'll learn more about VAM's in the process.

if we weren't under a tornado watch and it wasn't raining like crazy out side I think I would run around the block a few times screaming at the top of my lungs because I am so excited I can't sit still
