Yes, some 50 years ago and it did flatten the penny. But don't ask me what date or mint mark was on the penny! Bill

Oh yeah it was a favorite thing to do when we were kids. They flatten out like a pancake! I wish that I'd saved some of them.

My dad is really into trains and we used to do it all the time. Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. A cheap and easy souvenir. And yes, unless they fall off right before hand, the train flattens them good.

yep, all the way up to quarters! had a collection of flat coins! lost them in the last 20 years! each coin would flatten a different way. I recall that we use to try to get half flattend coins but thet were hard to find after they would shoot out at mach ten.. I'm surprized we never "poked out an eye"

I have a flattened penny that I found on the track of the light rail train in my city, it's pretty cool.

I still make guitar picks like that. There's a siding about 4 or 5 blocks from me and I prefer nickels. I lay out about 5 or 6 and make a line on the ground and look for them a day or so later. Not all come out pick quality... maybe one sometimes two. But I have a favourite thats about 9 years old and absolutely perfectly shaped (with wear as well), that required no trimming at all. If they didn't get "borrowed" so often, I wouldn't hafta... well, it's my own... I know it's really not a good thing to do.

Sort of on topic:
"Oh but me I got a nickel smashed flatter than a dime by a mad dog, runaway red-silver streamline. . . train"
Song by Guy Clark, titled Texas, 1947
Yea, I did smash some as a boy in my hometown; but like a lot of things including the entire 1962 Yankees Topps baseball cards, I no longer have them.

I started with Cents on the tracks, eventually working my way up to Hot Wheels.
