Couple of specs on this 1879-S Gold Liberty Head-
Weight: 16.42g
Diameter: 27.2mm

My questions are-
Does this like like normal wear with the middle being pretty worn, but the denticles still pronounced?
Is the diameter within tolerance for the mint (.2mm, not sure if this is "too big")?
I would say this grades about a G, is that a safe estimate?

I bought this for about melt, so I guess I'm just trying to make sure I didn't get a fake. It's not a rare date, or anywhere near quality and the weight seems good for the wear. That darn diameter just has me wondering, since I don't know if .2mm is close enough to the acceptable range.

Thanks in advance!

I dont know much about gold coins but I am posting because I want to bump this up. I have been exposed to gold coins here on the forum and in person and I have to say, I've never seen a legit gold coin that doesn't look gold. This looks like bronze or something. Even worn, all the gold coins I have seen are still gold in color. I dont think the color should change so drastically. I am interested to see what the more experienced gold collectors have to say.

I blame the scan (not a photo) for the color. Color looks okay in hand

Weight is OK for the amount of wear and you would have a much lighter coin if it were brass or a similar alloy. Gold coins seldom come this worn and when they do the denticles wear along with everything else. Maybe your coin is "normal" nevertheless but I wonder if it perhaps was in a bezel which protected the rims while the centers wore down.

Bezel set was my suspicion as well, this coin has seen some use.

I'd grade this coin at G6. It is more than likely an ex-jewelry piece having wear consistent on both obverse and reverse.

I tend to agree with the prevailing opinion of a set piece. A question comes to mind, though. What sort of setting, and what sort of use, might lead to such a degree of wear? I suspect this coin has a very interesting provenance.

Wow! Very rarely do you see a gold piece with that much wear. It looks genuine and the weight is correct.

This coin could be the centerpiece of someones "low-ball" registry set!
