Here is a challenge. In about 24 hours I will unveil a full photo of this coin's slab. Although I am trying to work on my grading of ANY type coin, I think I am especially horrendous at determining bust era coins' grades. Let's see how much better you all do! Keep in mind two things: 1. This coin may or may not be in a "problem" slab. 2. The blurring on the shield is on the holder and NOT the coin. Edited by Adam590 11/02/2010 12:37 pm

My guess is AU Details - Graffiti. The obverse details are amazing with very little apparent wear. The reverse has slight strike weakness in the center but again, great details and little actual wear.
It's really an incredible piece with minor (to me) problems.

My guess as well, Graffiti. This is in a PCGS Genuine holder and ungradable what ever that means. I agree that any other major TPG would call this AU Details. Nice coin!

I can't tell if that's graffiti or just plain old circulation marks. I think I am going to agree with busthalf's assesment of EF-40 details. Does not look cleaned or anything like that. Probably VF-20 value as a net grade. Nice... enjoy!

Those contact marks don't look too bad I've seen worse on MS-60 graded Morgans I would think AU-50 for this coin

I would say XF-40, graded PCGS.

Here it is! A PCGS problem free VF(30). I actually would have called it EF(40) with scratches myself--does this mean that PCGS decided these marks are planchet flaws? Was it net graded (even though PCGS claims that they do not net grade)? Maybe some of you can help me shed some light on how to distinguish planchet flaws from surface damage... And how would I value this? At a "typical" VF(30)? This coin's detail is what drew me in--and I have a hard time thinking of it as "typical" for its grade. What are your opinions?

Wow! That one was "silently" net graded down about 20 points! I don't believe PCGS thought those were planchet flaws. If they are, the grade should be much higher. Bust coinage gets some breaks and this is a good example of that. Although lightly struck in a couple areas, this piece did not circulate much at all. If you got it for VF money, you did well.

O, what a wonderful coin.
I say that PCGS thought the marks to be incidental to normal circulation, and conservatively downgraded the coin due to the prominent areas in which these marks were located. The remaining details certainly exceed the numerical grade. It is, to me, heartening, signaling a return to grading the coin and not the market.
I assure you, the slab/grade will not detract from the resale value of the coin, because its' virtues are obvious to anyone who understands the issue. This one, if offered, will sell at the very top of the VF30 market.

Quote: And how would I value this? What type of a value are you trying to assign? Resale? Insurance? Just for yourself? I'm sure if you went to sell it you would probably get a premium over a regular VF30, because the details are definitely stronger than VF.
