Well, here is another one I am having problems attributing. I know we have an unbroken "R", but the 4th star has a spike like VAM 22, but this is not 22 from the placement of the MM.

At what point whould the star be considered broken? Anyways, here are some pics.

It's not a 22 or 77. I would classify this as a "broken" fourth right star. The 22 and 77 show "extra" metal at that location and not a void as appears here. I don't have time right now to track this one down, so please be patient and I'll look tonight.

Nice pictures too. That makes it much easier.

Ok, I have figured it out, since SN thinks it is a broken star. I wasn't sure. I have attributed it to VAM16. This coin has the line in the right wing. doubling on the you in EPLURIBUS and the notch in the are in EPLURIBUS.

oober,

The obverse is a lock for the V16 but you will need to verify the reverse (die scatch on eagle's right wing and die chip on eagle's breast). My old eyes can't make those out on the pics. It's sometimes a last resort, but when nailing down 78-S reverses, pay attention to the area where the right wing meets the eagle's body. the mint engravers did a lot of re-engraving that year on the S mints. That area is almost like a fingerprint. With over a hundred 78-S VAMs I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point, but would definitely use it for a determining factor.

and Gene, you having trouble on a coin? Post pics amigo!

Actually my friend, you sent me a coin some months back for a prize...on guessing 2 vams you posted....It took quite a while as it is quite circulated, and it had something out of the ordinary....something not ever looked at for an attribution point...the coin was an 1880P
a year with many over dates....the key was the over polished hair, not in the usual spot,,,the VAM is VAM 25, the die chip on the reverse is gone due to circulation,,but the uniqueness was shared by another
and you continue to share with us, and I thought I would return the favour and return the coin to you.......many thanks for your support and wisdom of the finer points of vamming on this site!! just PM me
\Gene
