Folks, while I have just finished reading the thread, and was going to suggest thaat there might be a "gouge, (like the answers to a test), somwhere. it turned out to be so, and malibuhas it! I had the same problem with the size of the beads on the "Vicky's", with the three sizes, and there is a site that spells it out. it is verty hard for me to tell very easily, but the shape is a bit easier. I have a vision problem, obviously, so I use "cheaters" where possible. I suppose others do, also. dick

Dottir,
I went back to my library and looked around, and they had the 2009 edition Charlton guide. The 2010 or 2011 (I forget which) could only be used in the library.
Thanks again

Great to hear! A 2009 or 2010/11 are at least a whole lot more current than the 1977 eh? Take care and am glad if anything I said helped you or someone else!

I just found that I had the small beads variety as well. What I did so that I could count all those tiny beads was to lay my coins on my scanner, blow up the photo to 250% of normal size, then I was easily able to take a pen & cross out each dot as I counted. This worked very well. I made a few copies and recounted just to make sure, and indeed I do have the small beads variety. Do you think that maybe someone at the RCM used a proof die to strike circulation pieces? My 2009 Krause catalog shows the small bead variety only for a proof coin of that year. I just sometimes wonder how an error like this is discovered? Any ideas? John :)

hi, I had recently discovered that there was 2 types of 1982 fifty cent pieces so I looked and found I have 1 in my collection, 1 in my binder of "spare" coins and also I have two year sets. after reading this post I decided to take all 4 pieces to work and puton photocopier and zoom them 1 at a time to 400% and count them. to my surprise all 4 have 120 beads. 2 are still in the mint cellophane and 2 are in AU+ condition. my point I'm trying to make is..it makes me wonder just how "scarce" these type 2 coins are if I had 4 and they all turned out to be type 2 small 120 bead coins. it seems like the 118 large bead type 1 coins should be the sought after ones.
anyways, just my thoughts.

Why count the beads? Large beads, A in REGINA points between beads. Small beads, A in REGINA points to a bead.

No,the large beads A points between, and the small beads A points to a bead though ever so slightly to the right.
