Is that a nickel or a quarter?
I'm not yet aware if there are large and small bead varieties for either the nickel or the quarter for 1982 though.
You can check through what varieties this site lists in it's guide, which might help, and maybe someone in here knows and will reply :)

I picked up that small 2009 Charlton coin guide from the library this evening so had a look for you, the bigger 2011 new full version has more info and details, but this small one mentions the 50 cent piece large beads are 118 beads, and the small beads are 120 beads (the small beads variety more money ;) )
The small images they show in the book are way too small for me to "see" a difference by eye. Only 2 beads difference by count between them so I am imagining its hard to spot the difference by size and that maybe trying to count them would tell you? Ouch, my eyes!

Thanks Dottir,
I have not been able to get a Charlton guide yet (No book stores near me). Maybe I will try the library.
I will copy the image above, and use Microsoft paint or GIMP to count the beads. (I will just cross them off after I count them)
Thanks again.

Oh hey, that's VERY good news it's the small beads type. Hurrah for you! I hope you're even luckier to have got a good grade one. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. About the library, if they don't have a copy in house they could bring in a copy from another library through their inter-library loan option, just in case you aren't aware they can do that. I spotted the 2011 Charlton in a small bookstore in a mini Mall in town, they're selling for almost $20 PLUS taxes, to give you an idea on price range. Not bad at all for all the info and images in it. Great price!

I once read somewhere: check the bun just below the outward projecting jewel on the back of the queens tiara. If you can count 10 different strands in the hair befor a blank spot, it is a small bead low relief; If you can only go 3 or 4...it is Large beads

I went by the library yesterday and the only copy of a Charlton guide they had was a 1977...
Thanks malibu, I will try that. I am pretty sure I have a Small Bead coin, but its always good to confirm. Thanks again

Well if you counted the beads and there are 120 then thats what number beads the guide says for the small beads type. Too bad we couldn't find some good images and descriptions for you yet.
Re the library, did you check the reference only section of your library? They often have newer versions of books in their reference sections that aren't allowed out of the library.
The library one I have is from 2009 Carlton Coin Guide, 48th edition, and doesn't provide much info.
I looked at their small images of it and don't know if this is an indicator, but the last A in REGINA looks to point betwettn the denticles of the small beads one. The large beads points AT a denticle. I haven't seen any mentios of A & denticles placements as indicators for this variety though. I just had a look ;)
BUT ... if it does indicate then looking at YOUR coin, I see that your A points between the denticles just like the small beads image in the guide I have.

I never walked around to look, I decided to use the libraries computer and it said they only had a 1977 copy. I might go back sometime to take a look, or I will just have to order my own off Chapters. Thanks Dottir for all your help with this coin. Quote: Looks like an $80 coin. Nice find! Thanks, I just had a closer look at the coin using my loupe, and I could not see more than two very tiny surface scratches on the front and back. What would that be considered? MS-63? (I am new to grading)

You're more than welcome :)
The library computer would have shown any reference copies too so looks like your library only has that 1977.
My library has little requests for new titles to be added in the library and I'm thinking of suggesting they add the 2011 Charlton guide, even if just in reference section. They might bring it in by request :)
