What is that next to what looks like a die chip on the Reverse of this California State Quarter?

The first pic is a Normal Reverse

It looks like a die chip and?

Is that also part of the die chip or could it be another tree (possible DDR?)

Normal Reverse -Side of Mountain

It is a secondary die chip, full blown die breaks are the best examples to see the multiple stages of chips developing into a break.

Interesting shape to that secondary (or primary) chip.
Wonder if it is not too prominent to possibly be a clash.
Don't have a Cal. quarter handy to check out the obverse.
Just a thought.

This is a chip that expands next to a hardened device and sometimes stops there. The BIE examples seem to stop when the chip reaches devices on either side of the devices. This is not a Cud. a Cud is where part of the die including the rim area breaks away. Just a chip.

That's not a clash.

Sometimes a die chip can be caused by damage to the die. That looks like it could possibly be a tool mark that punctured the surface of the die thus weakening the area opening up the chip. Of course it could also me a manifestation of a growing die chip as stated before. Possibilities are many, but the end result is that this is a die chip.
