...was really awful (mostly 40s and 50s), but I actually found a 1909-S in it! It's in rough shape, though -- luckily I had one already! Other than the 09-S, the only other noteworthy dates are 1909, a nice 1921-S (probably EF), a decent 1923-S, and a 1932. It was a 1000-count bag. Anyway, I'd gladly prefer my earlier bags which had a good mix of teens, twenties, and mintmarks, even though the dollar value of the 09-S is higher. Does anyone else notice Wheat cent bags are going downhill? Edited by bibd 11/06/2010 5:00 pm

Where were you able to find a lot like this with an 09 S?

Sweet find! Haven't purchased any Wheat cent bags myself but I imagine the nice ones are slowly disappearing. It's only natural as time progresses.

I got a bag of 50 and ended up with a 1910-,1918-2 - 1927 - 1933 and the rest 40s and 50s filled in a few holes. Best grade G8.

Now it's my turn to say something.....and I'll ask it In question form. Where do you get Wheat cent bags? And for what price? The best I've gotten is a roll of wheat cents for $2.50, fifty wheats. They truly were unsearched, unless the coin shop who sold me them didn't want a 1910 in G and a 1917 that's at least VF35..... I would love to find a 1909S at any grade.

I'm assuming ebay? I've done a few, but it was because I had no wheats. I got a couple decent coins, but nothing super great yet.

I just bought mine from a nearby coin store (here in Canada). Unfortunately, they are too expensive according to the standard price people pay ($72 Canadian for 1000). But I've kept going back and have bought 4 bags or so since they seemed to be a good mix. Unfortunately, even with my damaged and corroded 1909-S, I'm not going back. They sold me over 20 memorials and Canadians, even a Roosevelt dime from 2001. Probably not worth the $72. I suspect you can get bags of 1000 or 5000 cheaper in the States, but they have usually been picked through more.

I think whether or not something has been "searched" or not is truly debatable. The local dealer sells them "unsearched" - but when he buys them from customers - who knows if they have searched them... most likely. but since everyone looks for different things. they seem to sell in the 200 to 250 range for 5000 on ebay, plus a bit in shipping - 5000 does weigh 34 pounds, but will fit in a USPS flat rate box. not sure how that works going into canada.

I agree on the whole not knowing whether a bag/roll is actually searched or unsearched. All I know is if I was a shop or dealer I would rather knowingly lose a 1910 and 1917 in a roll I call "unsearched" than to possibly lose more sought after dates in a truly unsearched roll, if you catch my drift...

Congratulations on the 1909-S!! I just bought mine a couple months ago for US$80, so you did good there.
I feel ya on not having luck with cents recently. My last two boxes have given me only five total, all 40s and 50s. I'm itching to try another bank, but it's Sunday and I have to wait until tomorrow. *pout*
Best of luck to you in the future!
