Hi there the coin is approx 40mm in diameter it appears to be made of bronze or copper. The date is almost gone, I think it is 1912 or 1612. Any information you could give would be great.

It seems to be a Portuguese Homeland type, rather than a Colonial type, for 40 Reis, but I cannot find it in my Krause. The ruler is Pedro II, 1683-1706.I could not get close to a match for Angola, Azores, Brazil, Goa, or Mozambique, as the colonial types had a coat of arms, rather than the ruler's picture.

Nope, sorry. Try another century. The date is 1812.

No, it's John VI ("Joao" in Portuguese, "Johannes" in the Latin as it appears on the coin). In 1812, John was Prince Regent ruling on behalf of his mother, the mad queen Maria I. The titles on the coin bear this out: JOHANNES D G PORT ET ALG P REGENS - "P.REGENS" for Prince Regent; the coins issued after he officially became King have REX there instead of P.REGENS.

The coin is listed in Krause as KM# 345.1. 1812 isn't a particularly scarce date.
