After lots of griping, I found 2 rolls of halves at a bank yesterday. They yielded 1 40% silver. Anyway, today I returned the rest to another bank. The teller looked them over and asked me, "Are these U.S.?" She had to ask a supervisor if she could take them. What kind of training do these people get on history of U.S. coins & currency? Mind boggling.

That is the saddest teller I've seen. They should at least know what kind of currency the us has. How sad

numismo, Been there, done that... lol Not too long ago I showed a teller a circulated coin set that I'd put together from 1910. $.50 through $.01. After looking at the coins, she admitted that she thought that they all looked "foreign" to her. If you wanna have some real fun...find some Ikes... ...and spend them at your local mini-mart! I try and keep 2 or 3 in my pocket at all times now.

Numi, Well at least she could read and speak the native English language. Throw her a bone since she's just just trying to cover her butt and is probably a newbie. These tellers can get financially dinged at the end of the day if they hand out more $s than they take in. Now if this happens again using the same coins on the same teller, you've found yourself a dork. In retrospect this kind of teller obviously would never in all likelihood have a clue about silver-based coins so I would put up with her in the future to your advantage. She's probably never going to search your requested rolls of coins for silver and consequently will end up saving you from wasting your time over the long haul. happy hunting mdp

speaking of ikes, my friend said that he had a dollar and a half dollar. i asked him what does they look like? he said that they were really old, I'm like okay, bring them I might be interested in buying. he brought a pres. dollar and an Ike dollar. i asked how is this $1.50? he said that the golden dollar was the dollar and the ike was the half dollar. i said that the ike is a DOLLAR not a HALF dollar and I showed him the area on the reverse where it said ONE DOLLAR. he said the quarters have one dollar on them too. i pulled out a quarter and showed him what IT said. long story short...i didn't get my Morgan and Franklin at an amazingly low price.

I was at the bank today asking for rolls of half dollars. I asked if they had any "large size dollars" and she offered me presidentials.. I said no no, the really big ones, with Eisenhower on them. She said yeah, I just gave them to you (referring to the roll of Kennedy halves she just handed me), then proceeded to pull one out of the roll... "See, Eisenhower." I said "No, that's Kennedy.." to which she responded, "Oh, you're right, there's hair on that guy!" Ugh. BTW - No large dollars, and zero silver in $50 of halves (all they had).

the other day I returned some loose half dollars--like 40 bucks worth and she tried to give me 20 dollars and I had to argue with her because she thought they were all 25 cents....
it's really infuriating.
sink drain. insert country and history.

when the tellers gave me some old $20's, from 1993, 1985, 1990, she said they thought they were fake! HAHA I told her if in doubt, save them for me!

figure alot of tellers are young trying to hold a job while in school. ages 20-24 in the banks around here.
That means they were born around 1987-1990 Can't blame them for not knowing about coins that have been out of production before they were even born or not used in general circulation.
Just like the first time I seen a V nickle and franklin as teen early adult never seen one before didnt know what or if they were real.
I mean lets be real is the bank gonna set down and tell every new teller here is a list of all the coins made in the usa from 1800 on get used to them just incase someone brings in a 2 cent or 3 cent piece or slips and 5$ gold coin in your hand .
No , the young ones are just used to seeing whats in circulation.

Same here, I had a young lady teller (age circa earlier 20's) look totally lost and complexed when I showed her a Franklin half dollar once! Her exact words were " Is THAT an American Coin?" Unreal!!

I have had a similar experience, not in bank, but in JFK airport. I was in transit and trying to get myself some State Quarters, something people must see every day. Those who would let me get some did not know what they were, most were foreign to be fair and had quite bad english, but even those who were american had no idea about State Quarters! In the UK I have asked quite a few people what is on our coins, without givng them a chance to look, nobody has an idea. The press got all annoyed that that we were losing britania from our coinage, as if anyone has actually noticed or would notice or care!

You guys have some dumb tellers. When I go and dump my rolls of halves, those young girls get all giddy thinking they might be about to score them some silver. It took me a while to catch on as to why they never had anything good at that bank. I decided one day to just start dumping there. Their reaction to me dumping several hundred in halves then tipped me off.

You have to remember that these young tellers walk into a job with little or no knowledge of USA money. However, so far I've had only one cashier take a second look at a Presidential dollar that I used to buy something with. She said she'd never seen one before, but she made sure that it read "One Dollar" before she accepted it. Nothing wrong with that. Try this if you really want to see an ig'nant person in operation: Go to the deli counter and ask for four-tenths of a pound of sliced whatever. Even though 4/10's is exactly the same as 40/100's of a pound, which is clearly marked on the scales, not a single one of the counter people I've asked for that amount (three sandwiches worth) knew what I was talking about. "Never heard of that," quote the last one I asked. Ever have to show someone how to count change back to you? Same thing. No one teachers that in school any more that I know of, and if something new is out of their experience, many do not possess the brain power to think themselves out of the situation. (I don't "blame Obama" - but I do blame NCLB, which is forcing thousands and thousands of teachers to "teach to the test" instead of teaching students to "learn how to learn" - which is what I did for 34 years.)

In my honest opinion, school is not the place to learn about retail skills. Although it's strange that they don't because, heck, what else are they teaching your kids?
pls: That's a great example. It's the same with weights and measurements here in Canada. All the old people still use imperial system when the metric system is standard and EASIER. You can't teach an old dog new tricks - it's so true. Old people just GIVE UP when you try to teach them that the things that made up their decades of life are just wrong and useless.
$5 says the teller is an immigrant.
