Hi all, 1. Just curious about how many sets do YOU work on simultaneously? I've noticed that some strictly work on one set, others maybe 2. I wanted to get a general consensus in one thread. 2. Do you think that it may be too ambitious to tackle all modern coin sets from all denominations at once? I've been doing that recently but I don't want any one collection to suffer because of that. 3. Also which method do you prefer to find your coins? a. Roll searching (seems to be quite prevalent here) b. Local coin dealer c. ebay or internet buying d. Other Thanks all! I know that coin collecting varies per person and I wanted to get some ideas from others AC

Well as I'm sure many are going to say do what makes you happy. Myself I'm working on 4 collections currently.
I use all that you have listed as far as adding to the collections.
What it boils down to is personal choice. Do what makes you happy :)

There are lots of answers to that. I'd follow InsideOut's advice and do what makes you happy and what works for you. If you can juggle 4 or 6 or 8 sets at once, go for it. I'm in the middle of about 4 myself, but I have stuff spread out all over a large table that's not used for anything else. At least my wife doesn't complain.

Hmm...let me see.... Cents - active Nickels - sort of active Dimes - sort of active Quarters - active Half Dollars - active Dollars - sort of active
I have about, just to name them by denomination, six sets I work on at the moment. If I named them by series name, everyone here would call me crazy.
I think you should go at whatever pace makes you feel comfortable. I only work on so many at once since I can hardly ever get the chance to complete a series. I pick up different pieces to the sets whenever I can.
I get mine mostly through roll searching, but when I get tired of hoping to find a coin I go find it at a coin shop.

Well, as this is the stateside forum, only one, Lincolns. I'm working (off and on) about 5 darkside sets, mostly Britain.
Because the collection is one started by my family (1960') I feel a need to finish sets started then but have only realized one complete so far. Other sets are getting real close.
I'm working cents in a couple of directions. BU and Proofs backwards, complete circulated date/mint rolls by roll search and bulk purchases, and finally and least often, purchase of hard dates.
I have 3 Jefferson sets started by the family but it will be awhile before I get to them.
Working just one set at a time does not appeal to me but I can understand the need to focus if it's a pricey set (like those fabulous Franklins that just went through the forum).
Have fun!

It is a balance between efficiency and finances. It is more efficient for me to work on more sets at the same time. I can look for and utilize coins I've found immediately. At shows I can cover a wider range of offerings, and on ebay I can minimize shipping costs with group purchases. I also do not have to worry about having a bullpen for coins I've found for future collections. The downside is financial - I would be spending more money, more quickly, or having all the albums move more slowly. I have ~ 5 sets I am working on, but some are a priority (e.g. I seek out ways to fill them) and a couple are "will fill the spot if I accidentally stumble across the right coin" albums that I do not go out of my way to finish.

I guess it depends on what you mean by working on. I have about 14 sets going right now but many of them are just waiting on the new year like Kennedy,Pres.,Sac.,Roos.,Jeffs.,.I do also have IHC,Buffs,Liberty Nickel and LWC that I work on when I come across a good deal but I'm not really active on those sets. I just like to have something to do so having alot of open sets gives me a constant opportunity. I have about 5 sets of Roos. dimes and LMC that are full and a couple of Kennedy sets. WHAT! I don't have a problem. Who said I have a problem. I'm just ummm.. obsessive maybe.

I'm presesntly working on way to many different sets. I go to many coin shows and have gotten to know many dealers. Many years ago I found that many of them buy up entire collections in Folders or Albums. They then take the coins out, place them in flips for sale at shows and then thow out the Folders or Albums. I've asked if they could bring them to shows and give them to me and many do just that. I keep most Albums, not all and give the Folders and some Albums away. So that is my problem now. Every time I get a new album, I start working on filling that Album. I have way over 100 Albums now. Mpst are full but there is always room for improvements so basically I'm working on hundreds of Albums.

I am working on 5 currently, Peace dollars, 7070 typeset, SLQs, Barber quarters and I just started Barber halves last week. My main method of acquisition is buying them from the coin store (although I need to roll hunt for the most recent coins for the typeset).

This will probably sound crazy, but I actually never stop working on any of my sets except for the bullion coins. If I run across a really nice Morgan, Peace, Walker, or Franklin, I up grade what I have and relegate the former coin to the silver tubes. My second Canadian collection (original collection was lost) will probably never be completed. Too many high priced coins need replacing and the only real time I see good, quality Canadian Coins is at the big coin shows.
Not to mention all the modern coins, especially if the mint offers a silver set. I'm sorry to say that I've become a hoarder. Good thing that recognition is half the battle.

1. I work on many at a time. For example I started with a empty set of US coins (1965-present and all sets)but I am almost done with most of those. Right now I am more focused on ATB Quarters and silver Washington quarters and half dollars. I always have a book that will tell me what I need for each set so when I look for quarters I find some others I need. 2. No I have done it and my collection is going smoothly. I love it. 3. Also which method do you prefer to find your coins? a. Roll searching (seems to be quite prevalent here)Roll searching is the best for modern coin b. Local coin dealer () best for key and semi key dates c. ebay or internet buying () For finding lots online with one or two key dates I need d. Other () ANTIQUE MALLS. I go all the time the other day I picked up a Standing liberty Q for only 2.50. :)they just usually want to get rid of 'junk'. RAW

I am like the others here also working on Lincoln cents- just need key dates, and upgrading. Buffalos- needs lots of work jefferson- just upgrading just started liberty "v" nickels kennedy half- upgrading IHC- work in progress Susan B's- need type 2 79 s also just started on proof silver eagles, and all standing liberty type coins. My world coins are a mess, have near 2000+ no organization. as for condition I tend to buy an the high AU range, they are cheaper and tend to have better eye appeal for me.
