Its time......to post a new topic for our learning experience.... and as grading is subjective I wanted to post a thread where we all can learn, using our buying experience VS the TPG services..... My friend has allowed me to post there pics, those from TPS and raw pics of there coins....... So tonight I will post the first coin, graded or raw pics, as you see them...and Post your thoughts.....Gene

The images are a bit too small or too low a resolution for accurate grading. But based on what I see: MS64PL.

if you could get some larger pics, it would help.

How can you grade it ms with that scratch? I think au is more like it. I think the coin is great but that scratch is way to distracting for me.

If the coin has never been in circulation, the scratch is completely irrelevant. That's why they call it "Mint State." The pics are far too small to grade from. I will say that, scratch or not, this is one_nice 8TF.

Technically, the scratch is not a scratch but a field scrape. All third party grading companies will take this into account when grading a coin. If it were a scratch which is considered post mint damage ( PMD) the coin would have never graded.

even so, that doesn't look so much as a scratch as a bag mark. they come frequently on Morgans as you probably know and grade surprisingly high with them all over the faces of coins as such (pics taken from bryan, thanks!) <<<EDIT>>> i didnt see that someone already commented, I forgot to refresh, sorry ozland!

The big question is how do third party grading companies deal with a field scrape? They all say they do not market grade, but with a field scrape, they typically do market grade by deducting a full point off of the grade.

For new members learning to grade coins, if you were shopping and saw this coin raw (not graded by a third party grading company), what grade would you assign to it? Now deduct a full point for the field scrape and that is the grade. Or is it? It depends on which third party grading company you are using. If it is PCGS, my experience with them is that they grade in half grades. For example. The grade maybe MS 64.5. If it is 64.5 the grade assigned will be MS 64. However, if it is MS 64.0, the grade assigned will be MS 63. In this case, also deduct a full point for the field scrape.

with that scratch in the field like it is I would call this one MS-63 and it does look to have Pl fields at least from these pictures but not sure they are deep enough to warrant a PL designation. if bigger ones are supplied it may go to 64 but just not comfortable grading higher from the pictures provided

MS63, possibly PL from the pics only.
