I've read a little about carbon spots on coins - is that what I have here on this Peace dollar? It sure does take something away from the coin whatever it is. It's not just something on the coin - it's more like it's a part of it.

Thanks for the responses, but I still don't know if this is something that can be removed without damaging the surface, or even what it might be. Would it be best to just replace the coin, and not worry about this one?

bad part about it is you cant really know without seeing a closeup of the spot. Usually the spots change the composition of the metal and even if the spots are removed there is still damage to the coin underneath the spot. I would try some acetone first and see what if anything it will do to help get rid of the spot

Ralph; unfortunately your 28 Peace dollar look to me as if it had at one time or another, some of that green stuff that grows on silver coins occasionaly. Then someone apparently attempted to remove it and was not very successful. A major fault when removing this stuff is what your coin appears to be suffering from.

My suggestion is to replace this coin in your collection and go on from there. Be glad you got rid of it to someone (if you can find anyone who wants it this way). Sorry, but that is how I see it.

Okay, I'll try the acetone first - if that doesn't help it, then I will, indeed, get another one. I don't like that big spot right there over her eye - very unsightly in my opinion. Won't sell it though - I've two sisters that I've been giving any extra coins to in hopes of getting them interested - probably just give it to one of them. So far, they haven't refused any of the coins, but they haven't shown much interest in collecting on their own.

My sister is like that too,she wants what I give her,but don't seem to get too serious about it.I've got a few coins soaking in olive oil now.Whether it works or not,the coins were headed for disaster anyway. :) sn31.

Yeah, I've gone the olive oil route with some of my large cents - patted them dry with cotton balls after their soak - gets some of the gunk off them without looking like they've been cleaned - never tried it on any other type of metal though.
