I was just curious, does toning affect the grade of the coin?
I have a silver dollar that is kind of rainbow coloured...almost looking gold than siver on one side.

How does this affect the grade of the coin.
Thanks

There are a lot of different views on toning. Many see it as tarnish and therefore damage to the coin. Others will pay a premium for nicely toned coins. Toning does not affect the technical grade of the coin, only the eye appeal. Though I have seen toning advanced to the point of flaking metal and that would affect the grade. It's a fine line between desirable and undesirable.

I'm moving this to the Main Forum for more exposure. I think you will get a lot of different opinions on this.

Right now, toned coins seem to be a hot commodity, at least with silver dollars, and the toning you describe could bring quite a premium. Could you possibly post some pics of the toning you describe?

Many times toning can hide subtle defects on a coin and potentially "raise" the coins grade. Moreover, toning can strongly affect the coins value more than grade, in either direction. Toning can be a sign of originality where a coin hasn't been screwed with. Not always, coins retone after cleaning, too.
