At a recent coin show, I noticed a dealer that had two very nice type coins in SEGS holders. I was amazed to notice the insert on both slabs holding these coins, was melted around the coin! It looked like the holders, at least the insert around the coin, was in a fire.
When I asked the dealer what the heck happened to these holders, he said they were at an outdoor show years ago, when the sun came through a slit in the tent, and melted the holder.
I couldn't believe it but continued to listen to his story.
He told me he sent them back to SEGS and they would not reholder the coins. The dealer was very upset and told SEGS, he would never use their service again.
These were $600 coins!
Well, I was amazed by his story but had to move to the next table ;-)

Wow! That's terrible! How much did he want for them?

They were both MS Seated dimes. I cannot remember the dates but he wanted $600 for one, and $400 for the other. He said SEGS uses cheap plastic because his other slabbed coins (PCGS,NGC,ANACS,ICG) were unaffected by the Phoenix sun! Why he exposed them to the sun is ? to me.
The holder around the coin was melted to part of the coin with air bubbles :o

SEGS slabs are undoubtedly some of the worst that I've dealt with as far as durability. In addition to the experience you mentioned, it has been my experience that they are generally extremely sensitive to physical damage such as scratching, and the coins are generally not properly secured in the slab. Nonetheless, I use them on occasion, though primarily for attribution, rather than grading or conservation.

Great point, they do seem to attribute quite often.
The slabs are the softest I've felt. I've only owned one SEGS coin, and never sent anything to them.
Welcome to the CCF!

Yes the plastic SEGS uses is softer. It is also more impact resistant and most people will tell you that the SEGS slabs are some of the most difficult to crack. But the dealer is full of it about th slab melting from just exposure to the Phoenix sun. It sounds more like they were in a fire.
