The die was damaged prior to being installed in the press or as it was being installed. I don't think they will ever know for sure but, none the less, it is quite rare to see such a gouge in modern times. Die cracks are due to wear and they do happen all the times as dies are under extreme pressure while in use. Some last longer than others before finally coming apart. I must assume the spear may have eventually wore down while the die was being used and that contributed to the low amount of readily visible speared buffalos being found?

How do I access these threads directly? Would like to see 44S coin. Had this one 20+ yrs. I like the speared bison. It be way cool, but at 4500.00+ for a 65? EYOW. Gotta wonder how many are really still in hiding. Probably still a good solid play. Way popular coins. Right from get go and smart move by mint. I like a bit of age to my coins. But, then again I am a bit aged also. Prefer to buy moderns in Gem+ full strike...Jeffs, Roosies, Bens, ect. I collect DDO, DDR, Overdates, and OMM. ect. They tend toward scarce, and Rare in high grade VVEDS. Would like to have bought a Stuck Buff a while back tho. Prices are smoking HOT. Good luck to all. Gusp

Buffaloboy this is a D mintmark. Yes that's the error. Wish I could post larger photos but this site limits the size.

Die cracks and chips are very common errors.

What is so unique about this one is the exact placement of the errors and the very low mintage of this variety.

I like it but some here have other opinions, to each his own.

PS I very much doubt that you will find any of these because of their low mintage and how that date got all bought up.

Good luck though.

I see the double horn for auction and they are selling for about $9.99 to $15.00. Do you really think this could be a sleeper error?
