A few years ago I bought a box of miscellaneous stuff sight unseen from a dealer friend for a cheap price. Included was a tube about three quarters full of steel cents. I noticed a little copper in it so I poured out the steel cents to see what I had. I found six 1914-D Lincoln cents. My first thought was that I could not possibly be that lucky. After a close look I realized I really wasn't that lucky after all. My six 1914-D's actually came into this world as 1944-D's. Some are better grades than others and some are better alterations than others.

You might want to post this story under the Modern U.S. Coins main thread. We'd love to see some more pics and know what type of "dealer" you bought these from!

At least you didn't buy them as 14-D's and then find out later they are actually 44-D's

WOW.. Looking at that coin, an untrained eye would think it was real.

At any rate those still sell for around $5 each as alterations...so it's not a complete loss.

Interesting "find" you have there. I cannot tell from the picture, did they obliterate the "VDB" from the shoulder?

I am going to move this topic there. It is not really a variety or error and more people might be interested in it.

I've seen a couple of these on ebay...trying to pass as 14-D's.Spacing of the 1 is a dead giveaway..among a few other things.

One of my favorite all time coins (the real ones).
Scary to purchase because there are so many counterfeits
out there, but the 44 to 14 are pretty easy to tell.

To bad I didn't save those we did when we were kids. Used to make 44's into 14's, 48's into 43's and lots of other changes we made with our handly little electric erasers. Just something to do and lots of time to waste.

I hate when I find something like that. Still, they're neat to find since they are Wheat Cents

I'm missing the four key dates, and the 1914-D is one of them. I've never heard of the 44-D morphing into a 14-D. Glad I learned about this!

Bmanofnbc ~ Oooh Baby!

Just Carl ~ Maybe Maineman750 is seeing some of your handy-work!

Matchbox ~ I'm glad I posted this if it helps someone avoid getting ripped off.

Upstate ~ It is easy to tell it is altered by the extra room between the 9 and the "1".

Jbuck ~ No, the VDB remains. Another indicator of an altered "44".

Coppercoins ~ I have occasionally considered parting with a couple of them but have a concern that they may fall into the wrong hands. As long as they are in my bank box I know someone isn't getting ripped off with them.

Bherring1964 ~ The dealer is an upright guy. Don't get him wrong by this one sale. He had this cigar box full of all kinds of odds and ends. Mostly "Dime Box" stuff that he did not have the time or inclination to sort through. I bought the whole thing for just a few bucks thinking it would keep me occupied for a longer time than a movie and for less money. And it did!

On these 44-D alterations, the space between the 9 and the "1", is clearly evident but to someone new to the hobby, they wouldn't know any better :-(
