Prior to 1953, people visited the mint I am sure for tours, etc. I am sure that the mint offered visitors the opportunity to buy coins from them. But how did the mint package the coins that they sold to the tourists? So in the years 1950, 1951 and 1952 - how did the mint package the coins for resale?

I think prior to 1953 the mint only sold specimen sets in hinged cases. Charlton designates it as number 10, and that it was used from 1938-1953. The empty case itself is a collectible that Charlton estimates to be worth $300 (source: page 231 of the 2011 numismatic edition).

I was curious about this as I bought a 1950 set in the plastic envelopes, stapled at the top. So the feeling is that the coins should be removed from the plastic? Wouldn't the set be more valuable staying in the original packaging? I don't have the white box. Thanks for the information, I had asked several dealers and they felt it was something done after purchased from the mint.

chad, that is interesting. Would those be: MS, PL, or SP? The finish I mean, not the presentation. If you get a TPG to verify that was a complete 1951 PL set, it would be worth a small fortune.
