I spent a long weekend back in Illinois visiting family this weekend. While at my mother-in-laws, she brought out a coin collection that was her mothers (my wifes grandmother) and let me see it. Two Morgans, Two Peace dollars, 25 Buffalo nickels, 25 Liberty Head Nickels, a Barber half, 2 1964 Kennedy halfs, 10 40% silver Kennedys, a handful of Barber dimes, a couple Barber quarters, 3 Standing Liberty quarters , and 7 1943 steel pennies and a 1928 G Red Seal 2 dollar bill. I looked at them all night. She said she was going to sell to a dealer but I told her I would give her what a dealer would when she decided to sell. The next morning when I left, she gave them to me to stay in the family. Very Nice surprise that I did not expect !

That's an awesome story. My great Grandfather left my uncle a very cool collection of foreign and American coins. I wish he would give them to me since he has no interest in coins at all.

I have never even went through all the coins my grandfather gave me, there is just a boat load of coins in there, I did search through it and find the 1955 DDO I have shown pictures of on the forum but havent really searched the whole collection to see what exactly is in there. I looked for morgans and didn't see any so I didn't search any further. He gave me about 30 books full of coins of various denominations and coffee jars and coffee jars full of other coins including a few jars full of world coins

That's cool Kerry. Are these coins in pretty good condition?I've only got one from my great grandmother, but it's been passed down a few times untill me,and I'm glad it has stayed in the family.I keep the ones my dad passed down to me for my son too.In the end,it's the sentimental value that counts.I'm happy for you :) sn31

What? The curiousity factor would be driving me crazy! And you haven't atleast done a quick check of the books or jars because?

Kerry: That was truly a very nice gift!!!!

I believe this may have been a test to see if you wanted to have them and/or interested in coins. When you showed an interest, she knew how she would pass them along for safe keeping.

A very nice surprise indeed! It is also a very big responsibility! You have accepted the task of keeping them in the 'family' and not disposing of them no matter what. There may come times when this will be tested and then you will know just how good of a decision it was.
I wish you success.

I agree, it is a very big responsibility. My son has been given a number of coins from various family members, some of whom have now passed away. And even though my son is only eight years old, I have explained to him the importance of keeping his collection. He knows that there are many types of "value", not just how much money you can get for something!

Kerry67, do you have someone to pass them on to when the times comes?

Sadly it seems I'm the only one in my family who likes collecting coins, so I have been asked by my family a number of times, how they should "get rid" of the collection when I'm gone. Jokingly they threaten to take the coins out of the packs and spend them at the local shops. They know some of the coins are worth a bit.

I'm hopeing that my son will someday provide me with a grandchild that I can inspire to collect coins. Otherwise, I think I'll sell my collection or give it away before I go, to ease the burden of my family having to attempt to get a fair price for the coins.

My grandfather passed this past year almost making it to 100 years old. He was an avid collector of morgans. I have a couple of nice carson city dollars from that collection that I plan to hold onto and pass along to my son. That was nice of the grandmother to pass these coins your way.

Awesome story Kerry67..

A friend of mine received a set that has been passed down from grandfather to father and now to him. The grandfather started a journal about his collection and right before he passed them down he made an entry in the journal of why he was passing them down and a little story about his favorite coin, then when the father passed them down he did the same thing. Now it is a running history. I started my journal as well because I thought that was a cool thing to do. I can only imagine in another 100 years, if the great great great grandson/granddaughter gets this set and journal how exciting that would be

My entire collection will go to our three children. All are responsible, and I think the coins will then go from them, on to the grandkids.

Who knows how long they will stay in the family. I hope indefinitely.
