I found this coin yesterday in a coin show bargain bin. What got my attention in particular on this coin was the type D reverse. Thoughts on grade? The picture is close, but the planchet streaks aren't obvious in-hand. Aside from a tiny, random nicks I cannot see any highpoint wear under a loupe.

Nice coin. I relatively am new to pre-decimals, so can you explain how you tell a "type D reverse"
Cheers Simon

A number of 1942I 1/2d's were struck with the reverse die of the 1943I half penny. It's more commonly known as the 'long reverse denticles' variety. The one pictured is one of the better ones I've seen, it might be UNC or there might be a touch of rub on HM's eyebrow. I have a couple of these in UNC (both slabbed) and neither is as attractive as the one pictured. I do worry a little about that green spot between the V and S of georgivs. I wrote a blog entry about this variety a while back: http://www.australian-threepence.co...variety.html

I cannot see any obvious wear on the high points of the design which means it is at least Unc. With random tiny nicks in the field and some red, I would say MS62.
Rennicks lists the coin at AUD $75 in Unc., and $150 in Choice Unc.
Rennicks top grade is "Gem" with a list of AUD $300 for this coin. I would assume that "gem" would equate to MS65.
I was unaware of the term 'type D' reverse, but I was certainly aware of all the history of the coin in your blog.

Thanks for all your input! This is my best example of this variety. I noticed that green spot too--I'm going to soak it and see if it lifts off. Interesting read, Markn--thanks for the link!
