I am one of the many who ordered the 2010 Silver Eagle this past weekend.... I wanted to know the best way to store this coin when it comes in. Should I leave it in the case they send it in? Do I but it in my fire proof safe? Will putting in my safe cause it to tone? Or should I open a safe deposit box at my local bank and store it there?

I am just looking for ideas...thanks everyone.

Storage in the OGP(original government packaging) is fine, the more important aspect is the surrounding environment. Keep it in a cool dry place and it will be fine. If you are storing coins in a safe, make sure you keep plenty of desiccant in there.

I put mine in the fire proof safe and leave it in the blue box from the mint. The actual coin is encapsulated in a plastic holder and I haven't noticed any toning.

My mint coins are all in their original capsules in the safe, there isn't room in the safe for all of the outer packaging so I store all of that in a large Rubbermaid tub. My oldest SAE purchased directly from the mint is the 2000 and it is still pristine, as are all silver coins purchased since then. One thing I do know is to keep your coins away from a cedar chest. If you lay a bare silver coin on a cedar shelf or drawer bottom, it will begin toning withing a couple weeks.

I keep all mine in their OGP and they're all fine. In the safe too.

I also want to point out that it is very important not to store your bullion SAEs between an anvil and a hammer, especially if the hammer is repeatedly striking blows to the anvil during storage. While the reeding is still intact in the sense that the reeds can still be counted, much of the original luster is lost.

Kind of like getting stuck between a rock and a hard place!

You must have been really peeved at that one.

Wow, I thought my 1989 ASE pocket piece looked bad.
It's (SGS) MS-70 next to clairhardesty's.
