Fake, the date is way to close together even with it being worn. also the bottom of the 1 looks a little slanted.

I have been thinking about buying it, because it is all I can afford for this date, but something is holding me back.

I can't make a positive conclusion based on those pics. It appears to have the characteristic weakness on the bottom right of the N in ONE and the top left of the N in CENT. However there looks to be some suspicious discoloration right where this characteristic weakness is supposed to be. I would not be confident enough to buy it based solely on those pics. This date is worth a significant amount of money even in this condition. I would want to be able to examine it in hand under magnification before buying it. Better yet, I would spend a little more money and get one that is certified by a top TPG. There are a lot of counterfeits of this date floating around. Are you looking at this coin "in hand" or is it online? Here is an article from PCGS regarding 1877 authentication: http://www.pcgs.com/articles/articl...d=313&type=1

It is an online pic from a very reputable dealer. I buy almost all my coins Raw but I thought the color in the pick up point was off too.

Appears to be real but exceptionally well worn. If genuine, I believe that coin to be worth at least $300. Send him off for slabbing!

Your coin from all appearances looks to be real. I am aware that there are many fakes out there, but for one this worn I would doubt it. Believe it or not, it is almost more difficult to make a worn fake than one in better condition.

It appears to be real but the area where the minting is weak on the 1877 IHC reverse is suspiciously scratched. It makes one wonder. Here's my pretty worn 1877 for comparison.

One thing that caught my eye is that the trailing Edge of the "U" and Leading edge of the "N" in "United" do not look right... too thick. Might be an artifact of the wear but I haven't seen other AG examples with similar lettering.

I was thinking real until I noticed one thing. Notr the end of the ribbon over the top of the first 7. On Moe's coin, and on all of the 77's in an auction catalog I have at hand, the end of that ribbon is over the center or slightly right of the center of that 7. On the OP coin it is left of center. I thought all of the 1877's came form the same obv die. If so then the OP coin is probably not good.

It could be both real and fake. It could be a real coin from that year but a bootleg. Depending on the price I would feel safe.

lol, I have never seen anything both real and fake. If its real its real and nothing fake about it, if its fake its fake and nothing real about it. Just can't be both
