I have recently bought two Jefferson 1994 commemorative sets,
and thinking it might be a good idea to have the matte proof
nickels slabbed.

I also have been watching for a good deal on the 1997 botanical
set and the 1998 Kennedy set. So that I can have the matte proof
1997 nickel and 1998 Kennedy half dollar.

So my question is how much will it cost me to send in 4 or 5 coins.
I am thinking PCGS or NGC. I have been told it is around $20 per coin, but the shipping and insurance could really drive the price up.

If I can find out what the exact cost will be, I can decide if I want to do this and plan for the cost.

Also I am thinking of having a local coin shop to send them in .. is this the best way?

Then I am thinking if it is going to cost over $30 a coin .. then I may switch my thinking and look for some that are already slabbed.

You will likely be looking at $30/coin even for moderns. It's often best to buy pieces that have already been slabbed for this reason. PCGS and NGC require you to be a member if submitting directly. A PCGS or NGC dealer could certainly submit for you but the cost doesn't change much going that route. Here's a couple links to the "Big Two":

Sure beats PCGS. There's another reason to rejoin. Much better specials.
Do they all have to be coins of the same date and type?

I know, I can look it up, but I'm lazy, scratch that...slug like, after too much turkey yesterday. I thought you might know off the top of your head.

No, they do not have to be the same dates or types. They will do any 10, but the max value of each can not be more than $500. For those too loaded w/ turkey, here you go:

The special is only good at ANACS until the last day of this month so if they are postmarked before that you are good to go. Download the submission form from their website.Cheapest way to go right now.

Thank you all for your response. It is giving me a lot to think about.
I was thinking PCGS would be my first choice. But the ANACS deal sounds
pretty good. Just have to put together 10 coins, if I go that way.

Modern coins (1955 to date) is $12.50 ea, at NGC. There is a minimum of 5 coins. However, you do need to have an NGC membership or have someone submit them for you.

Is it worth considering ICG? There is a local show tomorrow where there will be a grader on site providing his opinions and will take coins to slab for $9 at the show. Is ICG worth the consideration?

Not for moderns given that ICG has a reputation for being loose with moderns, although for classic series they seem to be fine.

What's your motivation for slabbing them? Looking at some BIN's on ebay they don't seem to be highly expensive and might not be worth the money and hassle to send them in, especially if you go with ANACS since ANACS doesn't add too much value given their notorious reputation for overgrading moderns.

wheatguy - I am not a big fan of slabbing coins, but for these
matte proofs I am thinking it would be a good idea for me.

1994 and 1997 matte proof nickels and 1998 Kennedy half dollar.

For me the reasons would be.
- The dansco albums, have no slots for these coins, and
I do feel I should have these coins to have a complete set.

- I have a lighthouse coin case, that has a tray for slabs.

- Also I guess there is always a chance they could come back
with a high grade.

- Lastly, when I am gone and some family member ends up with
my coins. Having coins like this slabbed may help them to
know the value of the coins.

I do think that if Dansco or some album maker in the future
ever includes these coins to have a complete set, these under
valued coins may take off.
