We received this coin, with what appears to be a broken collar, but with a piece of metal sticking out of the side of the coin. Does anyone know what could have caused this error? Any help would be appreciated.

99.9% sure it post-mint damage but could you also post a pic of the reverse?

I see a miss aligned die along with post mint damage. Too bad you could not have found it earlier before the damage occurred.

That's a genuine error coin. I am not sure exactly what it is, but it's not post mint damage.

It appears to have something to do with Feeder Finger Damage that occurred on a coin that was broadstruck.

I would really like to see a pic of the edge where the ROI (region of interest) is. If the adjacent edge looks scraped, then it was damaged after minting, probably being fed through a machine it didn't fit through properly because of the b/s or MAD it has. If the edge is not scraped, if it just has this protrusion, well I think that is less likely but I'm real curious about it.

It's a broadstrike that was damaged after the strike. That prong represents metal that was scraped off the edge.
