I was told at a local coin shop that sales were over for the 2010 ASE's. Does anyone know if this is true, I tried going to the mint web site, but it shows down for maintenance. Also has anyone heard anything on what the mintage might be. Edited by GR58 11/30/2010 10:23 pm

I believe your local shop is wrong. 2010 ASE proofs are still for sale on the mint's website. The bullion versions are usually switched to the following year (i.e. 2011) is December though. With current demand, even that could change. If there is one thing you can count on with the United States Mint, it's that nothing is certain!

Of the 44,160 graded by Professional Coin Grading Service so far this year, a whopping 36,470 pieces have received Mint State 70 grades. Currently PCGS MS-70 2010 silver American Eagles are selling in online auctions for $60 to $100, while certified MS-69 representatives can be found for around $35 and uncertified examples are seen at $30.If 82.6% of an issue submitted are considered "perfect", why would you pay 2-3 times the regular retail for one? This sounds like when MS65 Morgans wholesaled for $400, until the market realized there were hundreds of bags of them. Granted, no one is going to pay to get one of these slobbed unless they expect it to come back MS70, because even a MS69 will bring less than the bullion price plus slobbing cost. Still, there is NO WAY there are 36,000+ people putting together date sets of silver eagles, and even if there was, 99% of them would be perfectly thrilled to save 2/3 and have a MS69.

Orders for 2010 bullion ASEs are no longer being accepted, perhaps this is what your coin shop meant. The proof coins are far from being sold out. The bullion coins are still being delivered and possibly dome are still being made. Sales of those coins hit an all time monthly record this month, topping 4 million for the first time and finally beating the 3.9+ million record set in December 1986, the second month of SAE sales. A coin where the 70/69 split totally defies the prices being paid is the 2009 UHRDE. At PCGS, 7 of 12 coins submitted achieved an MS70 grade, with virtually the rest getting MS69. Only a handful got MS68 and below. Even with those numbers, the MS70 coins garner a huge premium of $600 to $1100 according to the PCGS price guide. Since you can still get new in the box coins, why pay that huge premium, just buy a few unopened coins and submit them yourself, then sell the 69s.

Always great to make money on supply and demand
Honestly though grades 66 and above are virtually the same, you cant see a microscopic scratch, etc. I have bought some register pieces before the same price the mint offered various silver dollars for issue price

Oh, I think they'll be lots of 2010 ASE available to fellow CCFers in the near future. Some of us forgot to cancel duplicate subscriptions.
