I just installed a new printer/scanner and would like you to grade away. This coin actually does have a purple tint on both sides. thanks

No, rotation is absent.
What prevents this coin from being an AU?
Also, what is your opinion about the quality of these scanned photos?
My Epson 610 scanner is brand new and I am unsure if it still needs to be tweaked or not.
Thanks

It's just my opinion. I think it's slightly too much wear to make AU50. The scans are not too bad. I do know that scanners can make silver or, in this case, steel coins appear "pinkish". You did say it has a purple tint. I would say it's a solid XF45.

Could you please be more specific and detail exactly the worn spots on the coin that are preventing it from being an AU?
I am just trying to become more proficient in grading techniques since this obviously is not an expensive coin.
thanks

IMHO: AU Details, Cleaned, Corroded
(chunks of detail missing from face and hair, unnatural looking toning for a Steel cent)

Here are some side by sides of that coin against an MS with what look like problem areas annotated

Nice work fenton. Also look at the shoulder, wear is apparent there.

tough call - I'd go AU due to lack of wear at the bow tie not consistent with what appears as excessive flatting at cheek and forehead in your scan. the reverse doesn't show the wear I would expect to see in an XF penny. as far as the scan goes - the color is errrr... wacked and the highlighting at the back of Abes head seems strange for a scanner - not enough resolution to determine corrosion IMHO

Could be an artifact of the scanner... how do those areas look in hand?

Please be the judge and jury using these recent photos now taken with my camera: not my scanner. In addition to giving me your opinion on the coin, please also compare the quality of the old scans to these new photos. thanks

I think you're spending too much time on this coin, it's worth less than a buck. Steel cents wear differently from the copper ones, this coin is no better than EF. You can buy yourself a nice, bright MS-65 for only $10, so, if you like these, spend the money.

A net grade of EF seems reasonable based on the photos definitely not mint state

Net EF. It has corrosion, which is common for circulated steel cents. And I agree - too much time spent on this one. It's worth a quarter.
Photos are ALWAYS better than scans because the lighting in scans is a very unnatural lighting. Any time you can, use a camera for coins. Use the scanner for paper, as it was intended.
