I wanted to put together a set of Presidential dollar proofs for my niece and nephew... in some kind of slab or plastic case since they're youngish. I noticed that there is no shortage of NGC PF69 sets out on ebay, etc., many of which are < $10/coin, in some cases quite a bit less than that.

I was trying to get a feel for the "value" quotient here - taking grading fees into account, are these people making much profit off the coins? Or, are they trying to get rid of them at/below cost while making up for it with PF70s they acquire? Just trying to figure out whether I'm being taken for a ride if I try one of these... or whether, when I consider how much they spent to grade/slab these coins, whether the price is reasonable.

Thoughts are welcome!

It all depends on where they were slabbed. If it was at one of the top four then they are really just getting costs back so they can do more 70s. If it is an off name TPG then you want to watch what you pay and what you get.

I was thinking something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/2010-S-1-PRESID...t_1167wt_998

How much does that cost to slab, assuming they do it in volume?

I think done in bulk you can get it down to the $6 to $8 per coin range. When they send in the bulk submissions they are shooting for the 70's and that is where they make their money. If they can get close to their costs back or even lose a little on the rest they are happy. Even if they lose a little they have free up their capital and the profits them make on the 70's makes it worth their while.
