I just bought a unopened mint set box on 2005 nickels. I decided to open the mint box to look at the new rolls. I noticed right away that the coins were a gold color. Each roll, P and D, were a light gold color. I am thinking they are toned but not sure. Both rolls and both sides were this way. Are these error coins or did they do this to all of them in the mint sets? Updated with pics: Edited by mojo423 12/03/2010 06:46 am

When you go to reply to a topic you click on the little green camera at the bottom. The pictures have to be at or under certain size to fit, though (I can't remember the size). to the forum, and upload some pictures!

Yes that is toning, not an error. Those are probably Brilliant Uncirculated coins. Would like to see pics.

Possible reaction from the plastic holder they are sitting in. The other coins would probably not show this toning, just the sides touching the plastic.

Well, I have to open them to find out if it is just the ends... I will post pics again if all of them are like this.
..continued
I opened them and it was just two outsides that were darker gold than the others. Plus the thin outer ring side of all the other coins. Some even had partial rings around the flat side of the coin too. If it was the plastic, why wouldn't the mint know about this and use something different. Am I the only one who has seen this happen?
... continued again...
So I had four more of these rolls come in today from a different company selling them. All four rolls had the same gold color coins on the outside. I guess they are all like that.

I'm not familiar with those wraps but I'm sure someone else here is and will be able to tell you what you have. Sounds interesting. Be patient, someone who knows will come along and let you know. :)

Toning is natural and often desirable for BU coins. I sometimes pay 2x or more market value for a beautifully toned coin. Nothing to worry about.

Sounds like something to add inside a flip/2X2 would be a piece of this material on either side to tone a coin, if your into that?
