I recently had a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar graded and slabbed by ANACS and it came back VG-8 Details. The details, inter alia, indicated "altered surfaces". Could someone tell me what that term indicates? Thanks in advance. Paleoguy

ANACS is the king of Details grading. I'm guessing 7 out of 10 of every coin submitted to them come back with some sort of problem. But yeah, altered surfaces basically means someone messed with it at one time other than cleaning.

altered surfaces can be anything from artificial toning to improper dipping. Anything that could alter the coins surface from what it was originally before it was messed with. They usually put scratched and whizzed and improperly cleaned when those things have happened so altered surfaces are usually AT or something like that

ANACS calls all of this more often. I have seen some slide at PCGS and NGC, but not at ANACS. Just like Vermontensium said.

I personally think ANACS is the hardest to get into a holder, they may be more generous on the actual grade though if you can prove it ain't 'altered', lol.

I think ANACS is more strict with their grading and slabbing of coins. I have a "details - cleaned" 1876-CC 10 cents that they graded MS 60 and it could easily go for a MS 66. I have seen many coins slabbed and appropriately graded that look just like my dime. Talk about harsh!
