It is estimated that 60% of the surviving extant 1891-CC mintage is the VAM 3 spitting eagle. The VAM 3 is considered a 'gateway coin' in to the world of vamming. It is a way cool coin. Congrats on the find.

Way cool! Was it in a junk box? Sometimes I find some decent coins in flippies in junk silver boxes just priced higher than the others.

Spitting eagle....heh...looks more like a smokin' (or tokin') eagle to me.

Hey zeewool, I thought the same thing because of the angle of the "spit", but I liked the coin oveerall and will get a better view of the coin whhen it arrives and I can scope it.
Meanwhle, the attached is all I could come up with today..

The tailbar is quite an interesting coin to me....I had one once, and the sheer magnitude of the presumed gouge was mesmerizing.

Now that photo that you just posted is why I continually look like such a fool on these forums....Is there something really wild going on with the southern edge of the obverse or is it just the photography? The reverse looks sorta fishy as well, but to a lesser degree....What is that yellow stuff that looks like it separates the denticles from the rim?

Just the acetate covering the coin affecting the reflectivity, zeewool.

The Tailbar CC's are a topic waiting to dominate my thinking; I'm resisting it with all my might because the other stuff ain't done yet. It's a fascinating variety; a naked-eye error during an era when I *know* great emphasis was being placed on production quality - anyone will tell you that the best Morgan Proofs were struck during the 1890's.

Here's better reverse of the 1886-s 2ndpic
As for the tailbar, I'll be unloading it before end of year...it's
causing embarrassment to my other cc's and is junk.
