Question - if this one were your's, how would you list it on your sheet? I'm thinking about listing it as G-4 with a notatation concerning the gouges on the obverse - you agree, or would you drop it down to AG-3 because of the gouges? They're located in a real bad spot, and they're numerous - definitely not something that can be ignored. Any help you guys can give me will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Ralph

I see nothing wrong with calling it Good with obverse marks. This key date should of course be certified to ensure authenticity. I'm sure many collectors would love to own this dollar in spite of the damage.

Unless you know of some reason you wouldn't want it certified; high retail for the 1893 S in G4 condition is around 2 grand. I don't have a Grey Sheet but would love to see an estimate.

Nevermind on the request for photos in the other thread, as I just saw this. This is way better than I expected...very nice and original key date! Congrats! I agree that the damage isn't significant in that grade to be considered a problem. I'd say its worth G-4 money.

I would certainly call it G04. The details look G06 to me and with the damage, G04 is very fair. It's worth close to $2000 so I'd consider slabbing it even with the problems.

Nice G-6 king, minor damage to the obverse, approximately $2,000 value

EDIT: G-4 net seems reasonable I wouldn't go as low as AG3

the funny thing is, when a coin goes below MS, and is circulated, SUDDENLY it should show no wear? NO dings even to G level? what gives? they have been circulated, dropped, pennies thrown up against a wall for the game....I guess thats there way of keeping the "dollar values up" but its not a real description of what a circulated coin goes thru.........especially at that amount of wear...must be all about the money...

This coin is G6 all day long but, with the pits, I'd have to say G4 in this level of preservation by any major TPG.

G-4. I have a true AG Morgan and the rims are really starting to merge into the field on it. This one has more than enough rims to call it G-4, but I would say with damage. Regardless, I'd consider this coin as it's a pretty good looking coin for the grade even with the damage to fill that key hole.

Okay guys, I went ahead and put it on my list as G-4, and noted the damage.
Thanks to all of you who responded.
I'm doing the elation thing right now, but I know that after the rush comes the down time, and, with this set completed, it's going to be a little difficult getting interested in another series right away - just part of the coin collecting experience, I guess.
