I have to say, most light toning in inevitable.. I realize that and I stopped to fight over this with mother nature. However, I still try to protect my cardboard 1983-2010 Uncirculated mint sets as much as possible. I keep them away from sun and heat sources such as windows and heaters. Is the only way to protect them from toning is to remove the coins from the sets, or anything can be done to slow, or totally halt the toning process?.. Any advices on that? I've noticed some years are more subject to toning, such as 1986. Is it because of the change in the compound of the packing material?
Where are you storing your coins? Humidity plays a key role in toning in addition to heat. If you have your sets together in any type of container with a lid, add some dessicant(silica gel is most common) to reduce humidity.
I am storing my sets inside a catboard box, the box sits in a cabinet along with other boxes. Although the cabinet is not taking direct sunlight, it is very hot and humid in summer here at Istanbul. Recently I have wrapped every set into a fridge bag. Ridge food bags, as much as I am concerned, are safe to use with coins.
Another thing comes to my mind.. Should I break down the cardboard mint sets that I have, and put the coins inside airtites to prevent toning. Or, should I keep them in sets ?
