OK, I have a copy Pillar just like this one but w/o the nicer edge and no chop marks. So have they taken an older copy and cleaned up the edge and chopped it to make it more sellable? The big problem I see with it is the "dots" all over the globes! Thanks, Paul.

I don't like the look of the coin, I don't like the look of the last 2 digits in the date and I would avoid spending any money on a coin that gives me that vibe. Coin looks to "pristine" to me to have big hard chops on it. It just doesn't look right.

If I had to GUESS - and it would be a guess at this point.

I would say RUN TO THE NEAREST EXIT.

The seller is located in China. I saw a quote I believe it was Mike Fahey (formerly of ANACS) and the quote goes something like when dealing with Chinese coins START from the premise that the coin IS COUNTERFEIT and work backwards to prove it is real.

That is the best advice I could give about doing business with any dealer in China. EXPECT that you are bidding on a forgery.

Thats where I was going also. I sent him a note saying that this may be a fake and asked for the edge pics,(that he did add!). He told me he is sure it is NOT a fake as he got it from a very respectable dealer.

My big question....... have you ever seen these little dots on the globes of a Pillar Dollar, other than on a modern fake from China?

Yes. That is how they start to look begining in 1761 when the globes were re-engraved.
