Maybe it's just my perception, but perception is everything and I just don't see SSDC as that great a force in the hobby at the moment.

While I see the group as a whole being very insightful and passionate in their involvement, I DO NOT see the same as any force of any kind in which it lends it self to the betterment of the hobby, or things to come........IMO.I would also say, like said before me, "perception is everything", so there!

Well, it looks we are all in the same lifeboat, awaiting rescue. Lets just hope that our rations hold out long enough where we do not resort to cannibalism.....(I don't want to be eaten, or feel compelled to eat any of you based on our varying opinions)...

for better or worse, I can't think of another organization in such a position as the SSDC,

That isn't saying much..... when in the position of singularity, you are both the best and the worst, last and first places..... When another organization is formed, then a comparison can be made.
So what did you get for Christmas Gene? I got a new mouse... (computer type).

I am 15 hours into a day during which I have neither faced another human being, nor spoken a word aloud. It is as I wished; the circumstances of my life allow me to take this day in meditation without offending or reneging on obligations. A soft snow now falls: delicate, elegant, so slow as to be almost still yet inexorably turning the world around me into monochromatic white. I live within a stone's throw from the ocean; it rarely snows here. I am forced to consider issues from the standpoint of one who knows that the world will survive me unchanged; indeed, has done so for everyone who preceded me. Nature does what she wishes. Quote: What profit hath a man of all his labor which he taketh under the sun?
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full: unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Eventually we will find all the possible variants of Morgan dollars. They were here before us; they will still be here when we're gone. Someone, somewhere, will decide if they're really VAMs, and we will ignore them if we think they're wrong. This, too, shall pass, but the coins will not. Don't lose sight of that.
