Been testing the camera with all types of coins and this is my test subject for LWC. It's not a high grade, it has dings, it has toning - the perfect challenge for me to capture! I don't know if this is gradable, but I feel as though it is. As I preview the pictures I see I struggled a bit to capture everything well too ;/

Since it's a crummy coin I assume the picture is okay? If we were talking higher MS grades, stuff would need be a bit nicer I'm guessing?

Great job on the pictures! Easy to grade from pics like that.

I will preface here by telling you that I call it like I see it with the photo given...so...

This coin was a nice VF until it was cleaned and retoned. The color is completely wrong, and the "toning" is a reaction to a harsh cleaner over years of being stored in sulphur from an envelope or album. If you mean "gradable" by sending it in to a grading company - oh HECK no...even if that coin weren't cleaned it would still be a 4 cent wheat at a high VF grade.

Best bet for camera play - shoot some red BU Lincolns that have slightly different tones of color and work on getting the color just right. That will be a challenge that will keep you busy for a while.

Chuck, I think he meant gradable, by the pics provided, hopefully! Yeah, this coin is worth 10C tops.
I also fealt it might have been 'recolored' as the toning does not look right for a VF level coin. There is obvious, mid-grade level wear.

Ahh, okay.

Then the only thing I say is to make sure the colors are spot-on, because that could make an important difference grading a coin by images.

Oh, I just noticed it looks like the pic was taken inside a 2x2.....so I'll say it again....always remove your coin and blow the dust off before taking pictures. Also, put the coin on a sheet of white copy paper, adjust your white balance and then take the pic. Having a white background is very important as it lets the people looking at the picture determine if your white bal was set correctly. That setting has a HUGE impact on how the coin looks. Also, don't do ANY post processing of the image other than to resize it. Playing with settings changes how the coin looks.

Weather or not this coin has been cleaned/retoned, I don't know, but I do doubt it. I got this out of pocket change. I appreciate what everyone has said so far though! I might do some more messing around with this coin and see if I can get a better shot of it for all of you.

As far as gradable, I didn't mean by a TPGC because I'd never send something like this in... :)

It is possible that the colors are WAY off in the photo, but the texture of the surface and the staining SCREAMS cleaned. Just because you got it out of change doesn't mean it hasn't been monkeyed with. I have spent a number of cleaned wheat cents over the years.

I think the "toning" is a result of a reaction to foreign elements. What we call toning is often the effects of all the coffee, coca cola, etc... that ends up in our change bins.

I'm not sure why I even put this in a 2x2. I'll probably dig it out here soon and post some photo's of it again.
