Going through my change today, I found a 1984 Quarter and the Mint mark P is filled in. In fact it is barely recognizable as a P. Kind of just a P shaped blob. Is this something? I can post pictures of it if that would help.
I just recently started sorting through my change on a daily basis and kind of new at it for knowing what to look for. Thanks for any help.

Most likely just die wear. After minting a gazillion coins, the dies wear out. Without seeing it to be sure, that would be my guess.

Others will have some thoughts on other possible causes, but a picture would be best.

Regardless, keep looking and keep asking questions!

Thank you Scooby Due! I'll get a picture up as soon as possible. You can be sure I'll be asking questions.

Sounds like die deteriation. The area inside the mint mark has a post on it to form the center of the mint mark. When the breaks off, the die is thus void in that area. Ever coin after that will have the same blob in the center. Sounds like a common event in the die life. No premium for this.

I spent over an hour last night trying to get my camera to get a good close up view of the mint mark. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyhoo, Coop gave a satisfactory answer. Thank you.

Enjoy your time here.

I had to go back and check the date on mine, but your post reminded me of the coin below that was included in one of my very first posts on the board.

If that were in a crude P shape, that's what it looks like.
Wish I could figure out this camera. It's a Kodak EasyShare DX7440 and so far, not that great for up-close detail.
Guess I'll be asking Santa for a better setup so I can post good pics on here!
