Hi all,

I have a US 2008 P and D mint set and I was thinking of starting to collect these starting from 1999 till 2010. I searched ebay and the values for these sets are widely different.
So can anyone help with an average value for P and D sets of each year, or post a link for this info.

Thanks

The Red Book lists them like this (they might be overpriced)
1999 - $18
2000 - $15
2001 - $20
2002 - $25
2003 - $20
2004 - $40
2005 - $13
2006 - $18
2007 - $33

Hope this helps

I suggest you look into buying a Red Book by Whitman Publishing. The latest edition, 2011, has been out since last April. The 2012 Edition will also be out in April of 2011.
In the 2011 edition, on pages 334 to 340 there is list of Proof and Uncirulated sets, their mintage quantities, issue price and approximate present value. The Red Book is rather known to be sort of fantastically over priced on almost everything but with such a list you could get an idea of how much you would spend purchasing such sets. Prices in that book are usually what they are selling for but those prices are not necessarily what you would pay. By that I mean even if you found a set on line, you would still have to pay postge, handling, insurances, etc. Some coin stores have them for real cheap prices since they may have to many in their stock.

The other thing to be aware of if you are looking to buy these is that sometimes the sets are "cherrypicked", where the best coins and/or sets are used as submissions as slabbed coins and the remaining coins or sets sold off. So, if you can possibly find someone selling their original sets, you might get a better grade of coins.

I second that about cherrypicked sets... I have a local dealer who buys them along with everything else that comes in... he does not have the time or desire to look at them. I buy them from him at bid (wholesale). That works out great as they are mostly from original buyers and have been in a drawer for however many years. I also get unreal proof sets that I sell as I am not really into proofs as they are too difficult to guess the TGP grade and cameo designation.

You can also use ebay but buy unpopened sets or those from someone who sells all kinds of things aside from coins... if they are a coin dealer (sell only coins), there is a greater chance that they are rejected sets or have been passed around. You should be able to find unopened sets without too much trouble. Just be patient and don't overbid.

There is a problem with the advice about buying "Unopen" sets on ebay. These sets did not come from the mint in a sealed closed envelope. The only way to get a truly "Unopened" set would be to buy then in an unopened shipping box from the mint with the seals still intact. If the individual sets are being sold sealed they have probably been cherrypicked and these are he reject sets.
