Hello,

I was wondering how many coins are in the Westward Journey series officially? I have done some research and there only appear to be 10 coins but it is possible with individual proof coins that there are 15 coins. Does anyone know?

Thanks,
Rich

There are 15 coins if you include the proofs. One coin from each mint for each design.

2004 has six coins, including proofs.
2005 has ten coins, including proofs and satin finish.

So...

If you collect only business strikes, there are eight coins.
If you collect business strikes and proofs, there are twelve coins.
If you differentiate the satin finish of the 2005 mint sets, there are sixteen coins.

I do not include the 2006 coins in these scenarios, since that design is still in use today.

Would this set be considered a type set? What is a type set?

Well, if I recall correctly, you have an Westward Journey album or folder that includes the 2006 coins, right? If so, that is fine!

I do not have such an album or folder...

My original Jefferson nickel album ends with the 2003 issues. I call that collection complete.

I then started a new album for 2004 to date; that is, it starts with the 2004-2005 Westward Journey nickels and continues with the current 2006-to-date design.

It is just a personal preference. I say that I do not count them, but that is just one person's opinion.

Sorry! I must have killed one while you killed the other... sorry about that! I waited a few minutes to see if you caught it before doing it for you.

For future reference, when in doubt, remove the SECOND post, not the first!

A specialist in the Jefferson nickel series would most likely consider the 16 different westward nickels as must have, as well as the 5 different types for the following years up until 2011 when they will supposedly stop the matte finish coins in the mint sets. I also count the 1994 and 1997 matte finish nickels in my collection and a bunch of varieties that include what they ( whoever "they" are ) consider the top 10 varieties.
This is one series that you can just go on and on adding to.
A complete set is probably considered complete with one of every year and mint mark for the casual collector.
There is no set rule for collecting, none of my collections fit in any of the pre dated albums they sell.
My type set overlaps them and I would have holes left behind to fill.
You are ultimately the one who decides what your set should be and when it is complete.
