This is an old PCI 64 that I bought years ago. Look at the strange "Dog Ear on the waist of the first "8" and the doubling of the "S" that makes it look like an "S" over "O". I found nothing like it in the VAM book for 1881 but did find other 1881S coins with the same "dog eared" waist. Oh, ignor the "IGC" tag name, it's supposed to be PCI. Thanks

It seems the die chips are fairly common on the early 80's coins. They start off small and seem to get larger with die ware. So we may need to take a look at the whole coin. I am beat right now after planning 950 plus board feet of cherry lumber and 4 siding it. I will look at later of what is now today!

Cherry, you selling any of it? OK I'm off topic. So the alleged "tooled" spaces around the "S" and additional metal at the "8"s waist are actually die chips. I doubt that there is anything special in any VAM Book for common die chips. I understand how worn dies can add features, but I'm amazed how they could cause all that damage to the mint mark.

My VAM book is dated 1991. I had no idea I've has it that long. Time for a new one.

though the die chips usually are not primary features, they are often mentioned as a means of secondary diagnostics for identifying of the dies used...this one looks close to VAM 17 OBV but I think the MM is not a match...I'll check back later tonight and see where its gone...
